Cynda Gary Obituary

Cynda Moss Gary

DUSON - Memorial services will be held Friday, September 4, 2015 at 11:00 at Christian Center Church in Duson for Cynda Moss Gary, 62, who died on Sunday, August 30, 2015, at Oakdale Community Hospital. Pastor and friend, Jody Beard will officiate.

Survivors include her husband, Michael Gary of Lafayette; her brother Asa Moss (Gwen) of Lafayette; sisters Agnes Moreau (David) of Iota, and Nancy Higgins (Paul) of New York. Nieces and nephews include: Aimee M. Morvant, Marie M. Allendorph, Anne M. Segrera, Carole M. Pinell, Asa Moss II, Jill H. Marsh, Katherine Higgins and Brian Higgins.

Cynda was preceded in death by her parents, Asa Victor Moss and Berthilde Hollier Moss. Cynda's sister-in-law, Gwen Moss, passed away 6 hours after Cynda.

Cynda lived most of her life in Lafayette and several years in South Carolina. She loved and was very proud of her nieces and nephews; loved her students; loved teaching, acting, painting, oldies music, her high school classmates, decorating her home, sewing costumes for plays, was always willing to help others in any way imaginable. She was a 1971 graduate of LHS, 1975 of ULL, acquired 2 masters degrees, a Professional Story Teller, volunteered in theater - producing and directing plays for Blythe Players. When Cynda was forced to retire from teaching due to Parkinson's Disease, she became an independent artist while continuing to live in the beautiful Carolina hills. Cynda overcame many obstacles - lung cancer, divorce, Parkinson's Disease - but thanks to her friends, family and her involvement with the underprivileged children of South Carolina, she was able to conquer and manage these challenges. Cynda moved back to Lafayette in 2009, to be near family and friends due to her failing health. In 2012, she reunited with and married Michael Gary, her 8th grade sweetheart and love of her life. Cynda was the founder of PEPP (Positive Experiences for Parkinsons Patients) in Lafayette.

Words of encouragement and donations for final expenses can be mailed to Michael Gary, P. O. Box 640, Maurice, LA 70555.

Visitation and service will be held Friday from 10:00 till 12:00 at the Christian Center Church, 315 Lagneaux Rd. Duson, LA 70529.

I knew Cynda in Greenville a few years ago and wished I had known her much longer. Cynda taught me about living with what we are given and what courage and tenacity she showed at every juncture. What a beautiful table she set and her wall murals..
Thrilled when she reunited with Gary and she had several years of loving bliss which she so deserved. She gave me a copy of her Chrismas book .. will cherish that and what a magnificent human being Cynda Moss was to all she knew therefore loved .. RIP dear Sister!

I met Cynda in 1997 when we were in graduate school together working on our Masters Degree in Storytelling at ETSU. We quickly became friends. I spent the night at her house many times on the way to and from storytelling festivals and events in TN until she moved back "home." And I spent weekends with her. I was on that trip to Canada with her and Chris! I marveled at her many talents. She was SO creative. If she wanted something, she just found a way to make it herself! And she was so generous. When I made my only storytelling CD, Cynda spent many hours designing the jacket cover for me and of course wanted no payment for it. I am so sorry to hear of her untimely passing. My sympathy to her husband and family. It is a great loss. "B.J." Abraham
