Lafayette is presently mourning the loss of a local legend. Walter J. "Wally" Romero, Jr. tragically passed away in a house fire on Saturday, September 4, 2010. A true bonvivant, known as "Uncle Wally" to most, "Wally World" was distinctly known to instanteously bring a smile and laughter to all. A good-loving, big hearted huge personality, he will never be forgotten.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday, September 9, 2010, at a 10:00 am Mass of Christian Burial in Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Church. Interment will be in the Calvary Cemetery.
Reverend Howard J. Blessing will be the Celebrant of the funeral Mass and will conduct the funeral services. Lectors will be Alexis Joubert and Gina Maestri and the Giftbearers will be Heather Dupre, McKenzie Fontenot and Tatum Fontenot. Beau Wofford and Matt Schomburg will be the Eulogists.
Survivors include four sisters, Diane Schomburg and her husband, Roger of Sugarland, TX, Gail Liggio and her husband, John, Terry Wofford and her husband, Sam and Julie Dupre and her husband, Kerry all of Lafayette, LA; his nieces and nephews, Matt and Chad Schomburg, Jennifer Fontenot, Gina Maestri, Alexis Joubert, Beau Wofford, Heather and Jake Dupre; and twelve great nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, WalterJ. Romero, Sr. and Doris Higginbotham Romero Hariu; and his grandparents, Isaac and Laure Higginbotham and Alexis and Lucille Romero Romero.
A native and lifelong resident of Lafayette, Louisiana, Wally was a loving brother, uncle, great uncle and friend to all who knew him. He was a 1975 graduate of Our Lady of Fatima School. Wally graduated from the University of Southwestern Louisiana (now ULL), where he earned his Business Degree He was a member and past president of Kappa Alpha Fraternity. One of his loves of life was cooking and had the privilege of graduating from the Cordon Bleu Institute in Paris, France.
Wally was a prominent and longtime insurance businessman and also owned and operated Paris Antiques. He was involved with numerous local charities and was a well known "Master of Ceremonies" for many fundraising events.
A Rosary will be prayed on Wednesday at 6:30 pm by Deacon Tim Maragos in Martin & Castille's DOWNTOWN Location.
The family requests that visitation be observed on Wednesday from 4:00 pm until 8:00 pm and will continue on Thursday from 8:00 am until time of services.
Pallbearers will be Matt Schomburg, Chad Schomburg, Beau Wofford, Matt Fontenot, Jeff Maestri, Jake Dupre and Mike Joubert.
