B.J. Hopper Obituary

On Monday, Aug. 22, 2011, at 11:26 a.m. B.J. Hopper left this realm. He was a resident of Baton Rouge for 60 years. He was born in Bentonville, Ark., on Dec. 5, 1924. He was 86. Very young he met an unusual person - his wife. They were married for almost 60 years. He was in the Army during World War II. He was among the third wave of soldiers on D-Day to "hit" the beaches. He was awarded the Presidential Unit Citation, Bronze Star and Marksman Medal. His discharge papers said he was qualified to become a truck driver and a sniper, which made for a lot of interesting conversations when I was young. He got his B.A. from Oklahoma A&M, now Oklahoma State, and his M.A. from LSU. He was a speech and hearing therapist in Ascension Parish for 25 years; then retired at age 49 to do movies et al. Some of the movies he was in were "A Woman Called Moses," "The Ponder Heart," "The Toy," but is best remembered as Mr. Alfred the trailer park owner in "Because of Wynn Dixie." My dad also was an actor and board member for Baton Rouge Little Theatre acting in "The Sunshine Boys," "Whose Afraid of Virginia Wolf?" "I Never Sang for My Father," "Gypsy" and as Fagin in "Oliver." He is survived by a son, Mac; and grandson, Drew; many in-laws who treated him and loved him as a brother, and nephews and nieces who loved him as Uncle Bob. He was preceded in death by his parents, Jack Hopper and Edry (Lough); and wife Alexa (Williams). We will miss you and do already. "Good night sweet prince, may flocks of angels bring thee to thy rest." Shakespeare. Any donations may be made in my dad's name to St. Joseph Hospice or Baton Rouge Little Theatre. A memorial will be held at St. John Methodist Church on Tuesday, Aug. 30, at 1 p.m.

God, how I miss BJ, Lex and Mac. Knowing BJ was an education and an absolute joy. A complex gentleman, he shared freely his life experience and wisdom. Highly intelligent, he was always a sincere conversation ( unless he was pulling your leg ), always present with his Southern Cordiality, a wonderful mix of patient teacher and actor. I didn't know of his part in D-Day, but I'm not surprised as he was genuinely humble. I came to know him and Lex through my friendship with Mac. I was always made to feel part of their family. Many shared evenings and meals during stop-over visits with them at their home in Baton Rouge in addition to their visits to Southern California with their son Mac, I so cherish the memories. BJ was to me in thespian expression, Vincent Price / Omar Sharif. Let's pick it up in our next liver ( Oops, lives- how strangely appropriate ) ... R.I.P with love for all, Rick

Just watched Because of Winn Dixie. He was a really good actor. At the party in the movie, I could tell that he was a really nice man, reminded me of my uncle. Wished I could have met him. Lori Muirhead of Flora, MS.

Mac, I only know your Dad through you and through his emails. But, I know what a special man he was because of you. You have my sympathy.

He enriched the lives of Dee and I for over half a century and was never less than kind and loving and accommodating. Like they do on Broadway, his passing was noted by all of us by a brief dimming of our heartlights.

Mac,
So sorry to hear about the loss of your father. He and your family have always been very special to me. Your mom took me to the Little Theater every night to work with her on Carousel. And, your Dad always treated me like I was one of the actresses of the theater. My parents trusted me with your parents. And, I loved hanging around with you. You always treated me kindly and gave me great hugs. I have tried to contact you on FB and your Dad, also. Hope God has been good to you and that you have faith that your parents are with you in your memories. Miss you all.

Mac, i remember meeting your dad the first time in the early 70's and then again in the late 70's or early 80's. each time i was impressed by his easy smile and friendly nature. i do believe that got him through this life and will serve him well in the next. God bless the Hoppers! Love from Paul and Kathy Hummer.

I had the pleasure of sharing the stage with BJ only once, but witnessed his immense talent in many other productions at the BRLT. He was an incalculable artist and an engaging man. He will be greatly missed by many more than me.

A wonderfully generous actor who always made those of us working behind the scenes feel like part of the ensemble. The light of the world shines a little less brightly now. He will be missed.

BJ was a wonderful man, a powerful actor, and a good friend and influence on me as a young girl at BRLT. His passing is a great loss to the community he so profoundly affected.

I am so sorry to hear about Mr. Hopper. I am one of those kids from Acension Parish that he worked with. We only had a few sounds to work on but he did it without making me feel less. He had such a fantastic voice, because of it I have always been a voice person. As a teenager I went to the B.R. Little Theater to see Gypsy and there was my Mr. Hopper. He was wonderful. I'm sure he will be remembered by anyone who came in contact with him.
