Hilda Byrd Obituary

Hilda Cabler Byrd was born Aug. 20, 1919, and died Thursday, July 11, 2013, just a month shy of her 94th birthday. A native of Natalbany, she was the eighth of nine children born to Annie Hanks and James Womack Cabler. She was a member of Natalbany Baptist Church and in recent years atteneded University Baptist Church in Baton Rouge. she was predeceased by her parents, eight siblings, husband, Richard Byrd; and son-in-law, Kelton Whitehead. She is survived by two daughters, Jewell Byrd Whitehead, of Denham Springs, and Patricia Byrd, of Baton Rouge; grandsons and their wives, Mark and Terri Whitehead, of Denham Springs, Darrell and Zanie Whitehead, of Denham Springs, Robby and Donna Camp, of Rayville, and Eddie and Stephanie Camp, of Baton Rouge; great-grandchildren, Matthew Whitehead, of Denham Springs, Joshua Whitehead, of Mobile, Ala., Jacob and John Whitehead, of Wilmington, N.C., Eden and Sadie Camp, of Baton Rouge, Rachel Slaughter, of Bossier City, J.D. and Dylan Camp, of Crowville; stepgreat-grandchildren, Austin McDaniel and Michaela and Kaley Brown, of Rayville; nephews and nieces including special nieces Karen Schmitt and Peggy Harris, of Denham Springs, Karen Fisher, of Baton Rouge, and Susan Keen, of Ponchatoula; many great and great-great-nephews and nieces, and special friends, June Boucher, of Baton Rouge, and Marie Bellue, of Springfield. Hilda was known for her quick wit and was an avid reader and bird watcher. She worked all of the newspaper puzzles daily. In her earlier years, she was very active in the church and taught G.A.'s, Bible study courses and training union classes. She especially loved her dogs, Jenny and Benjie. Visitation will be at University Baptist Church, 5775 Highland Road, on Monday, July 15, from 9 a.m. until services at 11 a.m., conducted by Dr. Rodney Taylor. Interment will be at Rose Cemetery in Hammond. Pallbearers will be Mark Whitehead, Darrell Whitehead, Robby Camp, Eddie Camp, Joshua Whitehead and Dalton Fisher. Donations may be made to Natalbany Baptist Church, PO Box 99, Natalbany, LA 70451 or Generations Hospice of Denham Springs. Special thanks to Dr. Rodney Taylor for your friendship and faithfulness for many years, and to Generations Hospice - especially Paula Garig and Ann Pruitt - for the respect and compassion shown to our mother. You both will have a special place in our hearts forever.
