James Woodland Obituary

"He has told you, O mortal, what is good; and what does the LORD require of you but to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God?" Micah 6:8 Born September 8, 1929 in Alexandria, Louisiana, Rev. J. Philip Woodland died at his home in Baton Rouge on December 4, 2015. Preceded in death by his beloved wife Madeline Cocreham Woodland, he is survived by his son James Randal Woodland and his partner John Gantt; his daughter Amy Lynn Espinoza, her husband Miguel Espinoza, and their children Philip Miguel Espinoza and Gabriela Lynn Espinoza; and his daughter Laura Beth St. Amand, her husband Mark St. Amand, and their children Bernadette Maree St. Amand and Zachary Richard St. Amand. Educated in the public schools of East Baton Rouge Parish, he graduated from Baton Rouge High in 1946. He received his B.A. from LSU in 1950, where he was active in the Wesley Foundation. He received his M.Div. from Yale Divinity School in 1953 and was ordained an elder in The Methodist Church. He and Madeline were married at First Methodist Church, Baton Rouge in 1952, enjoying a loving marriage until her death in 2003. He served First Methodist Church in Plaquemine for one summer, then a three-point charge: Pine Grove, Montpelier, and Killian's Chapel. In June 1955, Phil and Madeline moved to Baton Rouge to start Broadmoor Methodist Church, where their three children were born. He went on to serve St Luke's UMC, New Orleans (1962–71), First UMC, Slidell (1971-80) and University UMC, Baton Rouge (1980-91). After serving as the District Superintendent of the Monroe District (1991-97). Phil and Madeline retired to Baton Rouge, where they resided in Southdowns. Many remember his gifts of preaching, teaching, and pastoral care, and for his passionate concern for the church's role in creating a just and loving society. The list of organizations in which he served is long, including Project Equality, the Board of Church and Society, the Board of Global Ministries, and many other bodies of the Louisiana Conference of the United Methodist Church. He served as President of what is now the Interfaith Federation of Baton Rouge, the Baton Rouge Council on Human Relations, and the Children's Coalition of Greater Baton Rouge. As a part of Kids' Hope and VIPS, he volunteered for many years at University Terrace Elementary School. He was a tireless fan of LSU football, the Democratic Party, and the achievements of his children and grandchildren. A memorial service will be held at University United Methodist Church at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, December 9, with visitation following in the Fellowship Hall. In lieu of flowers, donations are requested to University United Methodist Church or the Interfaith Federation of Greater Baton Rouge.

Do Justice. Love Kindness. Walk Humbly.

Phil brought me into the La Conference in 1995 after I had returned from Africa as a very tired missionary. He was my first DS and a caring mentor. I knew that if United Methodists had people like Phil, then I had found a new home!

I remember Phil's excellent leadership in "Methodist Mondays," where he arranged for us to meet Methodist legislators and discuss our church's focus. It opened my eyes to another realm of church work. He also served as Spiritual Director when I was the rectora of Cursillo #55 and pretty much did what the spirit bade him to do rather than read the Manual. As always, he was wonderfully kind, helpful, and universally pleasant. I am so glad I knew him and am sending prayers to his family. God bless you all.

Phil, like his namesake Philip the Evangelist in the New Testament, was a bearer of the Good News in word and deed. He had the gift of discernment for what the church needed to do at the right time. We already miss his leadership in the Louisiana Conference of the United Methodist Church

I remember Bro. Phil from UUMC in the late 80s, and from his tireless work with many causes after he retired from being a full time minister. He will always be at the top of my long list of pastors. Those who knew him were enriched, and all who didn't are poorer for it. My sympathies to his family.

Growing up with Uncle Phil, I always remember what a kind loving gentle giant he was. Always a smile on his face ever present. He will be missed by family, friends and parishioners.I know in my heart he has passed over in spirit now with God, our creator, and will remain in our hearts forever. Much love to the family always.

What a wonderful minister Phil Woodland has been to so many different people. I am glad to have known him over the years, first as a preacher's kid my daddy was Rev. Jerome Cain), then as a pastor's wife (my husband was Rev. Alan Einsel), and then as a clergy myself through the years (Rev. Barbara Cain Einsel--deacon and director of Christian education). He was an inspiration to many of us who are clergy. I extend my sympathy to you his family and send my love and prayers to all of you. May God uphold you in this time of loss.

As a Kids' Hope Volunteer, Phil used to come in my library at UT to get books to read to "his kid." He was a lovely person who enjoyed helping our students.

Phil Woodland was a man of strength. And integrity. He was humbled to the point of servanthood. Serving his wife, children, grandchildren and serving the rest of humanity. I have never met anyone who had a servant life like Phil. His infectious smile shared with one and all will be missed. I feel quite certain he entered heaven with "well done you good and faithful servant" as his greeting. May God bless his family and. Grinds alike

Micah 6:8. I can't think of a more appropriate verse to describe Rev. Woodland. Truly a wonderful man and pastor.

It was a joy hearing his sermons. I still laugh when I think of the prodigal son sermon, where the son rode his Harley off to the French Quarter. He was a good and loving man and will be missed.
