I am so sorry to hear the news of Robert's passing. I was privileged to have been his secretary at LDWF years ago. I admired him greatly. Our loss is heaven's gain where there is no more suffering. My deepest sympathies to his family.

Dear Family,
I attended Northeast with Robert and was part of the girls that always kept up with him...that means; Libby, Sandy, Porkie, Cherwyn, & Carolyn. I'm the one who lives in Arkansas, Terre Green Ware. Robert and I were great friends. Never a sweeter soul was born into this world. His kindness and gentle spirit helped us all through good and bad days at that excitedly stressful and wonderful time of our lives. Although I had not seen Robert in a long time, I have kept up with him all these years. I'm so sad, to think of how you are going to miss him; even though you know he is happy in heaven and his pain is gone. My husband Tip and I lost our son,Nicholas, in 2006 and of course we miss him so much even though we too, know he is happy and busy in heaven. Robert always asked the North La. girls how we were, and how we were doing, every time any of them were checking on him..Yep, that's Robert! God was good and gracious to give us a human like Robert, a graceful spirit named Robert Newton Helm, Jr. God bless you all and you are in our prayers daily.

To Robert's family:
I just recently learned of Robert's passing, and I am deeply saddened. I worked with Robert at LDWF in 1997-98, and I had a tremendous respect for him. He was truly one of the kindest people I knew. I pray that you will soon be able to replace your sadness with good memories of happy times. Robert was a true gentlemen, a wonderful human being, and a devout Christian. We were lucky to have known him.

I served on the Mississippi Flyway Council Technical Section for 7 years and had the great pleasure of getting to know Robert. He was the epitome of a southern gentlman, always had a smile on his face and really did have an uncanny ability to find all the good eateries. I admired his ability to 'not sweat the small stuff.' He seemed to always know what was most important in life - God and family, and to live a good life. I will be keeping the entire family in my prayers, and pray that the good memories you have of him will comfort you during this very difficult time, and in the years to come. He will deeply missed but not forgotten.

I was fortunate to get to spend time with Robert at Mississippi Flyway meetings. What a gentleman! I can’t think of a better statesman in the flyway. It’s always said that one’s true character shows through during times of challenge. I was amazed by Robert’s calm courage.
I’ll miss Robert's leadership and mentorship. It won’t be the same the next time we have a crawfish boil without Robert there to show us Yankees how it’s done. There will be a void the next time we shoot or take a little time to play at the meetings. Who else could you count on for a game of croquet or shuffleboard? Ice fishing in Iowa at this year’s winter meeting definitely won’t be the same without Robert standing over one of the holes.
I just want Robert’s family to know that he touched many of us and will be truly missed. You are in my prayers.

I met Robert for the first time about 8 years ago. Before we met, I asked a friend what he could tell me about him. He said "He can teach you a lot about ducks. But more importantly, when it's time to eat, just follow Robert". That advice served me well as Robert had an uncanny ability to sniff out the best local places to eat, no matter where we were in the country.
I had the privledge of watching Robert on a memorable crane hunt in Saskatchewan last fall. You could always see that child-like enthusiasm in his eyes when he was enjoying the outdoors, particularly if waterfowl were a part of the scene.
Robert's passion for life, his faith, friends, and family serve as a good example for everyone, so I feel fortunate to have known him.
But he'll be deeply missed by all.

My heart and prays go out to Robert's family. It is great to know that he is no longer suffering and is in a much better place. I worked with Robert on the Mississippi Flyway Technical Section for over 13 years and always found him to be a dedicated migratory game bird biologist who considered both the status of the populations of the many species of migratory game birds and the La hunters.
I am sure his dedication and leadership will be greatly missed by the Mississippi Flyway Counil Technical Section, the state of LA and the hunters of LA. And he leaves a high standard for those that follow him to meet. Robeert, thanks for all you did.

It was my honor and privilege to have worked with Robert on the Mississippi Flyway Council Technical Section for the last seven years. Even with hours of long meetings and report writing Robert would always find a way to squeeze in a day of fishing, hunting or sightseeing. Many times a group of the southern boys would hear about an eatery that served up some of the local cuisine and we would slip off for a little R&R. Those memories will always be with us.
His dedication did not stop with the waterfowl resources that he loved. He also felt a need to present the gospel to those people that he spent time and/or worked with. Just last winter at the MFCTS meeting in Baton Rouge, Robert set aside a room and a little time to meet as the Fellowship of Christian Conservationist. This group met again in Knoxville and will continue as long as two or more gather together.
While my heart on one hand grieves for the lost of fellowship with Robert, at the same time it rejoices with the knowledge that right now he is in the presents of his lord Jesus Christ and is waiting there to welcome those friends that will be following him.
Robert, with that big grin, was without a doubt a true southern gentleman. He will surely be missed.

Robert was at once both teacher and student. His thoughtful and gracious style was a trademark that I am sure extended well beyond the sometimes contentious world of waterfowl management that we shared. That world is diminshed with his passing yet we are left with a wonderful example to aspire to.

Robert was one of the best people I worked with at LDWF. He was always willing to take time to answer my questions, and usually did so with a smile. I will sincerely miss seeing him at Bobby Santiny's on Grand Isle every April.

robert encouraged and supported my research on snow geese for many years. through his fine example, he guided me through dealing with many wildlife decision makers. he was among the finest people i ever had the pleasure of working with. on a lighter note, he taught me to eat "crawfish" and introduced me to his local customs and music. they were an integral part of this gentle man. i am better for having known him and will miss him a great deal.

I had the pleasure of knowing and working with Robert for many years as part of the Mississippi Flyway Council. Robert was highly respected among his peers and he was the first to receive the Flyway's "Waterfowl Stewardship Award" for over 20 years of service dedicated to waterfowl conservation. Robert was so much more than a professional acquaintance to many of us--he was a good friend and mentor.
My thoughts and prayers are with Robert's family during this difficult time.

To all friends and family of Robert Helm:
My deepest sympathies to each of you. I became acquainted with Robert years ago and considered him one of the finest people that I have ever known. His great smile and good nature always made the times I saw him a great pleasure. He was truly a wonderful person. I had the pleasure of seeing Robert last year. As always, he had a great outlook on life. He actually had words of inspiration for me, and as always, he put a smile on my face. Even though I saw him sparingly, I will miss him.

To the whole Helm family:
I have many fond memories of Robert growing up in the Pennsylvania and North Carolina Street area. Robert's brothers and sister and my brothers and sisters played baseball many a day in the Helm's back yard. There were the Cheneverts, Helms, Russos, Kearneys, and Souliers and probably others I am missing.
Robert was alway a very nice person. The last time I saw him was at Mardi Gras 2008. He had that great big smile on his face. My mother hadn't seen him in years and was so glad to see him.
I always had a special place in my heart for all the Helm children and also Dr. and Mrs. Helm.
May God help you through this difficult time......

To Robert's Famibio;ly,
Though I'm still "evacuated" from Lafayette, I just learned of Robert's passing. I worked with him on several occassions as a biologist with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, and found him to be both a dedicated professional and passionate in his love for migratory and resident waterfowl and their habitat. He was a conservationist in every sense and will be sorely missed throughout the conservation community. My deepest sympathies to you all in this time of loss.

My heartfelt condolences to the entire Helm family and especially to Robert's children Abigail and Anna who I have watched grow up into beautiful young ladies.
I had the previledge of spending many wonderful days outdoors with Robert over the past 30 yers as a friend and a co-worker for the La. Dept. of Wildlife and Fisheries. Memories of those special times I spent with him in a duck blind, on a rabbit hunt or on out on Catahoula Lake working for the ducks will stay with me the rest of my life.
Robert was a working "hero" for wildlife resouces and hunters during his entire career. He tried to represent the interests of both wildlife resouces and hunters with equal respect and fairness. No wildlife biologist I know worked harder at doing that than Robert.
I will miss him terribly....but celebrate his wonderful life having witnessed his strong love for his family, faith and work.
