Steve Bonfanti Obituary

Steve M. Bonfanti, Jr. passed away peacefully at his home on January 4, 2019 following a courageous battle with cancer. Steve was born and raised in Baton Rouge and graduated from Baton Rouge High School. After high school, he joined the Army and served as an air traffic controller. Immediately following, he opened the well-known Bengal Lounge on Highland Road in 1961. He owned and operated the Bengal for 32 years, and was involved in commercial real estate in and around South Louisiana for many, many years. Steve was a Baton Rouge icon, always knowing someone wherever he went. With his smile and warmth, he never met a stranger and could talk to anyone and everyone. From parish priests, to politicians, to physicians, to random people on the street, people loved to share stories of their time at the Bengal, and loved to reminisce about the roast beef and hot-sausage po-boys, curly cue fries, humdinger plates for a dime, and penny pitchers. Many tell his family they still picture Steve behind the bar or in the kitchen. Steve created a place that brought together so many people, a lot of whom became friends for life. Steve was a long time parishioner at St. Aloysius Catholic Church. He loved to cook, bake, collect wine, hunt and entertain his family and friends. He loved the outdoors. He hated the cold, yet loved to in Nebraska in December. Steve is survived by his wife, Brenda Bonfanti; his three daughters, Leigh (Charles) Sasser, Brindly (David) Downs and Mary Michael (Michael) LeLiever; four step-children, Ron Clayton, Stephanie (John) Crawford, Andrew (Darah) Rafaleowski and Cody Rafaleowski; ten grandchildren, Charley and Cecilia Sasser, Ella Claire Down, Hayes and Bennett LeLiever, Nelson Clayton, Jane-Elsie and Mary Clayton Crawford and Gracie and Gunner Rafaleowski; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins; and countless friends. He is preceded in death by his parents Steve M. Bonfanti Sr. and Virginia Dimattia Cline; and brothers, Joe Bonfanti and Dominic Bonfanti. The vigil will be held Tuesday, January 8, from 5-8 pm with the Rosary said at 8pm at Greenoaks Funeral Home. Visitation will continue Wednesday, January 9, from 9 am – 12 pm with a Mass of Christian Burial at St. Aloysius Catholic Church at 12pm with burial services immediately following at Greenoaks Memorial Park.

Steve gave Lance Marino the green light to hire me at The Bengal in 1983 as an incoming Freshman at LSU. I worked there through 1985, but hung out there until I graduated, and went back every time I was in BR, until it was no longer there. I am forever grateful to Steve. Not only did I really need the job to help get me through college, but I made life long friends because of his business. It was a special place. Thank you Steve. Rest In Peace.

This sad note brings back memories of the Bengal in '65-66' when I was freshman at LSU. Steve was always behind the bar or in the kitchen cutting 'hot sausage' to be served on a plate with crackers and mustard. He was like the Energizer Bunny!!! He always said his hot sausage was good but the next day when you went to the bathroom, you'd need a gallon
in of ice cream and a fan!!!! May he RIP!

Steve was one of the kindest men I've ever known. I was a longtime customer of the Bengal. Whenever I saw Steve in the public he always made sure to say hello and ask how I was. One time when I was ill and was being wheeled into the cardiologist office, Steve saw me and immediately jumped up to assist my sister to help me in. Of course he showed concern about my health and wished me well with my appointment. My sincere condolences to his wife and family. God Bless this kind man.

Memories as far back as 1962 when my future husband stopped at Bengal on his arrival from CA Steve served him his first poboy. It was good knowing Steve through the years. R Slack

Without a doubt Steve was the absolute best tavern owner I have ever met. He treated the Bengal as a business and was more than successful. I was at LSU in the mid sixties and I remember Steve was at the Bengal at 6:30 in the mornings, sweeping and cleaning and getting ready for the days business. He was an amazing person and would have succeeded in whatever he chose. I remember one day he took me with him to the bank and showed me his new Continental Lincoln Mark III. Hot sausage plates with crackers and mustard were the best. I respected "Bon-stein" as many of us called him, for his committment to honesty and hard work. The guy just did not stop. Everyone loved Steve. I do not know how many people he knew, I just know that a lot of people knew and respected Steve Bonfanti. May Steve RIP.
