Dickson Dunlap Obituary

Augusta, GA – Entered into rest on Sunday, May 25, 2025, Dickson B. Dunlap, M.D., 91, loving husband of 46 years to Susan Driver Dunlap.

Dr. Dunlap, a retired endocrinologist and true Renaissance man, leaves a rich legacy of service, creativity, and compassion. A graduate of the University of North Carolina (UNC) and UNC Medical School, Dr. Dunlap served honorably in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War before dedicating his career to medicine. He held faculty positions at the Medical College of Georgia and served with distinction as Chief of Medicine at the VA Hospital, where he was deeply respected for his clinical expertise and leadership.

Beyond his medical achievements, Dr. Dunlap was a man of wide-ranging talents and passions. An avid oil painter known for his evocative landscapes, he opened Dunlap Studio and Gallery and taught classes at the Gertrude Herbert Institute of Art, where he continued to create and inspire in his retirement. He was also a devoted musician who found joy in playing guitar and harmonica and was a founding member of the contemporary band at his church. With his beloved wife of 46 years, he traveled the world, always seeking beauty, knowledge, and new experiences.

A faithful member of Saint Bartholomew's Episcopal Church in North Augusta, Dr. Dunlap brought warmth, insight, and generosity to every aspect of his life. He will be remembered not only for his professional accomplishments, but for the depth of his intellect, his artistic spirit, and the kindness he showed to all who knew him.

In addition to his wife and her daughter: Rachel Baker and her husband Anthony. Dr. Dunlap is also survived by his children: Dickson Dunlap, David Dunlap, Deborah Lott, and Donna Ingram; 11 grandchildren and numerous great grandchildren; and sister: Lida Wright. He is preceded in death by his parents, sons: Drew Dunlap and Christopher Anderson, and daughter: Rebecca Barela.

A memorial service will be held Friday, May 30, 2025 at 2:00 P.M. at Saint Bartholomew's Episcopal Church with Fr. Joseph Shippen officiating. Burial will follow in Westover Memorial Park.

Memorial contributions may be made to Saint Bartholomew's Episcopal Church, 471 W Martintown Rd, North Augusta, SC 29841. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service, beginning at 1:00 P.M., at the church. Inurnment will follow at Westover Memorial Park.
