Beverly Byer Obituary

Beverly Byer

- - Beverly Byer, a past-news anchor and reporter for KSBW TV and KION, died on October 31, 2018 in Reno Nevada at the Renown Medical Center after her second battle with cancer.

Beverly was born in Richmond, California to Norma and Ellis Byer. Her father was a decorated Army Air Corps navigator in WWII. He was a food industry chemist with a national reputation working for General Foods in Florida during his family's early years. He then founded Oregon Freeze Dry in Albany, Oregon where Beverly grew up.

She graduated from Lewis & Clark University in Portland with a degree in Communications and Journalism. The University honored her with its "Outstanding Young Alumni" award in 1986.

Beverly had an unquenchable desire to understand other people and cultures. A gifted reporter, she worked as an anchor/reporter at television stations in Portland, Pittsburgh and Seattle. Her extraordinary talent then led her to NBC News in Tel Aviv and, later, to cover the United Nations in New York as a network correspondent. Her stories on refugee camps in Southeast Asia were groundbreaking as were her stories on Middle East terrorism.

Her sense of adventure made her a pioneer in TV and took her where few women of the time had ever dared go: riding camels in the Sahara and diving in the Red Sea. She left the world of network news to settle on the central California coast, which she loved, working as a television anchor at KSBW.

She was known for reporting powerful stories on local personalities, businesses and causes as well as her mission to bring donated medical supplies to an underserved children's hospital overseas and her successful first battle with cancer.

Beverly was pre-deceased by her parents and brother Gary, who graduated from the Robert Louis Stevenson school in Pebble Beach. She is survived by her son David Kasavan who spent most of his time in her final weeks and passing by her side, niece Brenna Smith and nephew Ian Byer.

Beverly was a kind and deeply loyal friend. She leaves behind lifelong friends in California, Oregon, Seattle, Israel and New York who will miss her terribly.

In Beverly's memory donations may be made to Temple Beth El, (1414 Riker St., Salinas), the American Cancer Society, (1534 N Main St, Salinas), Lewis & Clark University or donor's favorite charity.

Memorial Services will be held at Temple Beth El in Salinas at 11 AM on Friday December 14, 2018.

I just watched an old Monday Night Football game between Seattle and Atlanta from 1979. Beverly did a few local newsbreaks during the game. She looked like a good reporter, doing her job. I'm sorry to see she's gone, but it looks like she had an interesting life.

I knew Beverly, in fact we dated when I was still in college and she first went to work for KATU in Portland, Or. One of my fondest memories of her was when we both dressed to the nines and went to see "Tosca", performed by Portland Opera at the Civic Auditorium. We did the ritz with dinner before and coffee with dessert after. She lived in this lovely little cottage in Oswego. She was the most brilliant, charming and lovely woman. In my mind I see her now, and she was then and is now, an angel. Charles [email protected]

I just learned of Beverly's passing.and am so sorry for your loss. I recently reconnected with her at our high school reunion. Beverly was my best friend from eighth grade through college. After I married and left Oregon, I always made a point to visit with Norma on my visits home. She would be full of stories about Beverly's adventures!

I was thrilled to see Beverly at the reunion! We spent the evening sharing stories of our families. She was so very proud of you and told me how talented you are in he construction field. She told me she would love to return to Monterey to be closer to you.

The world has lost a star and I am so sorry she is no longer writing about new and exciting ideas. Beverly will always have a special place in my heart.
