Paul Danielson Obituary

Paul Everett Danielson Jr.

Aug. 18, 1938 - March 1, 2016

Salinas

Beloved Husband, Father, Grandfather, Minister, Educator, Conservationist, and Friend

The Rev. Paul Everett Danielson, Jr. passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on March 1, 2016, weeks after a diagnosis of cancer. He was 77.

A resident of the Monterey Bay area for nearly fifty years, Paul devoted his life to serving others and exploring and protecting the Monterey environment. Paul was born Aug. 18, 1938 in Santa Barbara, to Paul and Katharine Danielson. He graduated from Princeton University in 1960 with a B.A. degree in Religion and then earned a Master of Divinity degree from the Union Theological Seminary in New York City and an Anglican Studies certificate from the Episcopal Theological School in Cambridge, Mass.

Ordained as an Episcopal deacon in 1964 and a priest in 1965, Paul began his pastoral career as assistant rector of St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Endicott, NY, serving under the Rev. George Entwisle. Inspired by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Paul and his future father-in-law went to Selma, Alabama in 1965, to join fellow clergy in registering voters and standing with civil right leaders to protest racial injustice occurring in the South. Paul fell in love with his boss's daughter, Margaret Entwisle, and they wed in Endicott on June 25, 1966.

The next year, Paul and Margaret moved to Santa Cruz where he was the assistant at Calvary Church and chaplain at UCSC.

In 1969, Paul became Pastor at the Church of the Good Shepherd in Corral de Tierra, Salinas - moving into Toro Park the very day their first son, John, was born in Santa Cruz. Paul and Margaret helped grow Good Shepherd, a small mission church, into a dynamic Christian community with more than 200 active members. Their family also grew with the births of sons, Mark and David. A highlight of Paul's time at Good Shepherd was bringing the church to full parish status - marked by a spectacular celebration at Grace Cathedral in San Francisco. Another highlight was an extended sabbatical Paul took to the Holy Land. But best by far was the 16 years of sharing life with his parishioners, his friends. Paul also served periodically as a part-time chaplain at York School in Monterey for more than 40 years.

In 1984, Paul left Good Shepherd to become chaplain, teacher, coach and pastor at All Saints' Day School in Carmel Valley. During his 17 years at All Saints', he nurtured, entertained, and inspired hundreds of young people, their parents, and the school's staff. For many, Paul became the "heart" of the school, and went on to perform numerous marriage and baptism ceremonies for grateful alumni.

Paul retired in 2001 and began his "third career" focusing on conservation, hiking, his spiritual life and continued service to others. He concentrated on preserving the wild beauty of the Big Sur Coast, the Ventana Wilderness, and Marks Ranch. He was a Board Member of The Big Sur Land Trust and was especially committed to the Ventana Wilderness Alliance conservation organization. He explored the Ventana Wilderness extensively and connected with many longtime residents to discover its history. His passion for hiking the Ventana led him to publish two comprehensive books describing abandoned trails and camps of this rugged area: "Lost Camps of the Ventana" and "Invisible Camps of the Ventana." He will be remembered as a Ventana Legend.

Though officially retiring in 2001, Paul continued to serve his community by ministering to the residents and staff of Carmel Valley Manor and Madonna Manor; delivering donations for Nancy's Project; and preaching and leading studies at St. Joseph's Church.

Paul loved sports, music, hiking, camping, traveling, reading and exploring. He was always inquisitive; loved learning and challenging his mind. He was a kind and gentle serving soul, full of curiosity, caring, humor, and love, which he shared generously with others.

Known as "Father Paul" to hundreds in the Monterey Bay area, Paul had a unique ability to form meaningful personal connections. Paul will live on in the hearts and the good deeds of the many people whose lives he touched. He will be greatly missed.

Paul is survived by his wife, Margaret; his three sons, John, Mark, and David; his daughters-in-law, Kristen and Margaret; and his three grandchildren, Kai, Ruby, and Madelyn.

A Memorial service will be held at 12:00 p.m. on Saturday, April 2, 2016, at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, 1 Railroad Ave., Spreckels, CA 93962. The family asks that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made in Paul's memory to the Ventana Wilderness Alliance (http://www.ventanawild.org - 831-423-3191).

Father Paul, I know I am several years late on this but, I wanted to wish your family well. You baptized me, officiated services for my Dad, confirmed me and married me! You played a big role in my life and I will never forget your strength and your ability to be omni-present, yet silent. I have thought of you with fond memories for many years. I thank you for all the teachings, the unconditional love and all of the support during the death of my Dad and my step-Dad. You had a huge heart and you will be missed!

He baptized me, back in April of 1972 at the Church of the Good Shepherd in Corral De Tierra, I served as an acolyte & my BSA Troop 93 had their meetings in the parish & he would make occasional visits to our meetings. He was a fantastic priest . When I became a Catholic in 96, I called him at the Episcopal School in Carmel Valley & gave me his support when I went into RCIA, I was surprised to see him as a Catholic at St Joseph's, I believe it was around 2009 or 10 there abouts. He still had an awesome personality. May his spirit rest in the hands of Jesus Christ.

I knew Father Paul in the late 80's as he was the resident pastor at All Saints Episcopal Day School. I haven't seen in him over 25 years but he holds a very special place in my heart for influencing my young mind on how to show tolerance to all and live with Love towards others. He was kind, generous with his time, showed humor always and most importantly for me, allowed a 12 year old to find her own belief structure without imposing his ideas. Even when he was confronted directly with questions about the existence of God. Thank you Father Paul. I don't know if you ever realized how many you touched and influenced.

I was sad to read of Father Paul's passing. I so enjoyed working with him on the board of The Big Sur Landtrust. He was an ever energetic inspiration out on the hiking trails as well always greeting me enthusiastically when we met up or passed on the trail. He truly made the world a better place. I feel so privileged to have known him. He touched so many lives in such a positive and meaningful way.

Although we lost touch, I remember Paul fondly as another big brother. He was thoughful, intelligent and so compassionate. He obviously kept that same persona throughout his life. Love to Margaret and sons.

My dear Paul,
You have been in my life for over 40 years, first as my minister, and later as my dearest of friends and my counselor. You have baptized my children, as well as marrying one of them. I have loved you so much for lo these many years. Life without you will be so hard, but eventually I'll smile again thinking about you and your gentleness, your ears to listen, and that wonderful smile. You have touched so many lives, Paul, with your wise words and counsel. You have lived such an exemplary life. Talk about a life well lived, that is you. You have been such a wonderful guest here on earth and now I know you are in the arms of your beloved Jesus and how happy that must make both of you.

I think I've hiked the Ventana longer than Paul but I bet he has twice the mileage there! His legendary explorations are well known.

Paul, Steve Chambers and I were trying to relocate the 'lost' Prewitt Loop trail around 1995. Steve and I finally circumnavigated all of it in October and spread the word. I think the next day, I received a call from Steve early in the morning asking me to help look for Paul who had not come home. Before we mobilized I got another call- Paul had slept in the canyon that night after losing his way and walked out early to call home. He was fine.

I'll truly miss this great hikemate.

I already miss Paul deeply. What a wonderful, gentle, soulful man. Our wonderful (and often daring:) hikes together were always augmented by our common faith.

I know you're resting in the deepest, truest peace now, Paul. And my thoughts and prayers go out to your friends and family.

The Ventana Wilderness Alliance is characterized by giants who not only love the wilderness but work and strategize to leave our precious wild lands unspoiled for generations to come. Paul as one of the first people of the V.W.A. to initiate action will continue to be an inspiration for all of us. Such a powerful legacy to leave and for us to ponder what this means. To Paul's family we extend our condolences. We also want you to know that Paul set an example which will reverberate throughout our precious Ventana wilderness. The amazing vegetation will bear witness to a man who believed in something and took action.
Thank you dear friend. Your spirit infuses the Ventana Wilderness.

He loved the natural and cultural history of the Ventana and Paul shared his love with anyone who cared to learn. His adventurous spirit will always be with me.
