This notification commemorates the one year passing of Jimmie Dean Powers, a long time resident of Avalon.
Jimmie passed away at Hotel Coliseo, in Jinotepe, Nicaragua, on February 25th 2024. He was 56 years old.
Jimmie was born on April 24th, 1967. He was a child of deaf parents. He was a beloved son, brother, and friend. His mother (Nona) and Father (Brian) are both deceased. He is survived by his younger brother (Shane).
Jimmie was born in Portland, Oregon, at Emanuel Hospital. From a very young age, he took a strong interest in playing the guitar. From early childhood through his teenage years, he intensely studied rock guitar, then classical, and then finally jazz.
In early adulthood, his interests changed to traveling, and he began working in the travel industry. Jimmie worked in the Hotel industry for many of those years. This included stints in Portland (Mark Spencer Hotel), the Dallas Ft Worth area, Eureka, California (The Carter House), and elsewhere. Prior to his passing, Jimmie was a boat captain and a bus driver, at Catalina Island.
Jimmie lived on his sailboat for most of his adulthood. He always had an adventurous spirit, and taught himself how to sail. His level of commitment and boldness earlier on, sometimes outpaced his experience. There were several instances at sea, where he tempted fate and somehow managed to get through it unscathed. Jimmie particularly loved traveling south to Latin America. He was sometimes a thrill seeker who enjoyed a certain element of danger. Military dictatorships fascinated him. He was always interested in immersing himself in foreign languages. Jimmie also was an avid day trader, having a keen interest and knowledge of the subject.
There's no doubt that his family, friends, and acquaintances all have their own individual accounts of his quirkiness and singular sense of humor. Jimmie was a unique and special individual.

He will be missed.
