Richard Cromie

Attorney Richard J. Cromie of Colchester, Connecticut (formerly of Coventry, Connecticut) was born on December 9, 1935 and passed away peacefully on May 17, 2025 surrounded by his loving family.

He is survived by his wife, Kathleen, and his children, Florence, Laura (John), Patrick Flaherty (Raven Ong), Blaine (Jill), Heather, LeeAnn, and Harry and grandchildren, Olive, John, Felix, Valentina, Delaney, Erin (Eric), Missy, Kevin (Tyler) and Kimmy and great- grandchildren. He was predeceased by his sister, Mary Lou and his son, John. Born in St. Paul, Minnesota he grew up in Hartford, East Hartford, and Vermont. After he graduated from East Hartford High School he attended the University of Connecticut where he was involved in student government and Democratic Party politics. He received his law degree from the University of Connecticut School of Law in 1961 and began practicing in Hartford. He moved to Coventry with family in 1969 and moved his law practice there shortly afterwards. He lived a full life deeply embedded in family, politics, sports and laughter. He cherished the role of small-town attorney and worked to improve the lives of his clients and his community. He served many years as a member of the Coventry Democratic Town Committee including several terms as its chair. He was particularly proud of encouraging people who had not thought of community service to run for office some of whom went on to serve their communities for years, even decades. He also was interested in bettering the lives of young people, serving for a time on the Coventry Parks & Recreation Commission but more importantly as a coach for many youth sports teams particularly baseball and as a Boy Scout merit badge counselor. His love and generosity extended beyond his biological family with Harriette and his second family with Kathleen as he opened his heart and home to those in need: Florence, Laura and Stephen. Being a grandfather and great grandfather gave him great joy. He leaves a profound void in the lives of all who knew and loved him; his memory will be cherished by all whose lives he touched.

A celebration of his life will be held Saturday August 23, 2025 at 2:00 p.m. at the Second Congregational Church, 1746 Boston Turnpike in Coventry. All are welcome.
