Robert Hackemack Obituary

WILLIMANTIC

Robert Lee Hackemack was born December 31, 1941, in Louisville, Kentucky, to Catherine (Schreiber) and William Herman Hackemack, Sr. Bob was the middle of 2 siblings older brother William, Jr (Georgia) and younger sister Sharon Ann (Tom) Bennet.

Bob will be forever loved and cherished by his wife, Jean M. de Smet, his daughters, Leslie (Tony) Ryan and Andrea (David) Geary, 4 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren. Bob was predeceased by his son, Bryon M. Hackemack and his first wife, Barbara Okey, the mother of his 3 children.

From a young age, Bobby was outgoing and playful-- he liked to play hooky from grammar school and later cut the rug at the high school dances. Bob played football at and graduated from Flaget High School in 1959. BobbaLee and his good friend Michael Jones (Mick) spent many hours together fishing and hunting doves.

In 1963, Hack joined the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 369, where he rose through the ranks to become a Foreman and eventually an owner of Abel Electric along with friends Gerald Baker and William Abel. Bob's electrical career allowed him to enjoy traveling around the country, eventually bringing him to Connecticut in 1982, where he fell in love with his future wife, Jean, of Willimantic. Bob transferred to IBEW Local 35 in 1988.

Bob and Jean spent the next 42 years playing, working and building a life together among cherished friends. Together they enjoyed softball, motorcycles, skiing and drinking with Tony and Kathy and many friends in the local pubs. Bob and Jean were married in 2009. We often heard Bob would give you the shirt off his back as Bob always lent his hand or knowledge of electrical work. Bobs fun-loving and generous nature will be missed by our community.

Bob passed away at home in the loving company of Jean, Leslie and Andrea on November 12, 2024.

I'll always remember Bob's warm and generous spirit, and his humor. He was so important to our community, and always ready to lend a hand. How many of us can say that a friend, a) resolved the mysterious live electrical curcuit in their newly acquired 100 year-old house, AND b) pulled them out of a stuck exterior elevator in the rain, AND c) jumped in to help bartend her wedding as a guest?
Of course, Jean did all these things alongside Bob, but I am remembering our friend Bob, a real treasure. We send so much love and care to Jean and his family.
