Dear Betty and family,
We were surprised at Ray's passing. Just happened to see it Thursday in the obituaries. We could not be at mass for Ray due to a conflict. Know that you certainly were in our thoughts and we pray that God gives you comfort in the days ahead. Ray will be missed. We valued our friendship that spans decades....
Sending our love and hugs.

Ray and I played football together at Reynoldsville High, under "Coach" Clarke and Mike Antonetti. He played End and I played Tackle, right beside him. Ray graduated two years ahead of me and we rarely saw each other until the late 1970"s. At that time, I was working in Sullivan County, PA and we somehow reconnected. Ray, his son Chris, my daughter Deanna and I shared some wonderful fishing and backpacking trips in the remote backwoods of Sullivan County.
Then, in 1980, Ray and I came to Maine to canoe the Allagash and to see moose (we found well over 40). I got to try my first lobster but Ray refused to "eat a bug that big". We also did some touring of the rest of the state after the canoeing. Mattawamkeag Wilderness Campground brought us a bear in the night and some incredible rapids in the river. We arrived at Cobbscook Bay State Park after dark and set up our tents with the ocean lapping the shore at our tent flaps. At first light, we were astonished to discover that the ocean was gone and that we were camped at the top of a cliff overlooking a thousand acres of mud. The 27-foot tide had gone out while we slept.
Some friends we met on the Allagash, the Gagnon brothers, came to PA for several years to hunt deer with Ray (many more deer in PA, but Maine has bigger ones). The Allagash trip convinced me of where I wanted to be and by 1984 my family and I had moved permanently to Maine. We still saw Ray occasionally on our trips to PA and on one occasion Ray and Betty drove to Reynoldsville from Minnesota to see us! We also met a couple of times in Maine while Ray had trucking layovers while awaiting a return load.
Ray, I have many fond memories. May you rest in peace.

PS: Chris, if you are reading this, are you keeping the chain oiled?

I knew Ray through my father, Jim Philp. I tagged along on a number of outdoor adventures with Dad, Ray and Chris as a child. I knew Ray to be a good man and I am sorry for your loss.

Rest in peace. I will never forget Dad and I coming down to the farm to hunt.
