Richard Shugarts Obituary

Richard C. "Dick" Shugarts, 82, a Johns Hill Road, Brookville, PA resident, died on Friday, May 9, 2025, at Penn Highlands DuBois, following a brief battle with lung cancer.

Born on June 27, 1942, in Brookville, PA, he was the son of the late Wilbur and Genevieve Swineford Shugarts.

On April 23, 1966, he was married to Evelyn L. Sitosky and she survives.

He was a U.S. Navy Vietnam Veteran serving from June of 1962 until July of 1966 at the U.S. Naval Hospital in Bethesda, MD as a medical technician. He attended Immaculate Conception Church in Brookville where he and Evelyn could be found every Saturday, exactly one-half hour early, waiting for mass to begin. No exceptions. He was a member of Hobah Lodge #276 F&AM in Brookville. Retired, Dick had been employed as a Pennsylvania State Police Trooper from 1970 until 1991. Almost all of those years were out of the Troop C Punxsutawney Barracks. After retirement he continued to stay active working as a part time Brookville Borough police officer. He also could be found most Friday nights and Saturday mornings at the former Crooks Clothing Store on Main Street in Brookville. Dick also helped out at R.D. Brown Memorials for more than just a few years, and could be found delivering flowers during peak seasons at the former Ferringer's Flower Shop also in Brookville. After 25-plus years past his first retirement, he concluded his days of serving his community by retiring once again, this time from the Jefferson County Sheriff's Department where he was involved in the transportation of prisoners, working as security at the Jefferson County Airport, and handling the 'Orange Crew" shuffling them around the county, as temporary inmates performed all sorts of maintenance style chores. In his spare time, he sure enjoyed spending time with his friends, attending all of his grandson's baseball games, swimming and soccer events, telling story's and building fires in his fire pit while swinging the day away listening to Willie's Roadhouse on his XM radio.

In addition to his wife, he is also survived by a son, Eric Shugarts (Mary Raffeinner) of Brockway; a daughter, Denise (Steve) Johnson of Brookville; and three grandsons, Seth Shugarts, Thad Johnson and Daniel Shugarts.

In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by a sister, Mary Margaret Case; and brothers, William "Billy", Gary and Arthur Shugarts.

Visitation will be on Wednesday, May 14 from 3-6 p.m. at the Shugarts Funeral Home Inc. in Brockway. A funeral service will be held immediately following at 6 p.m., with Fr. John Detisch officiating. Burial will be in St. Marys Immaculate Conception Cemetery in Brookville, with Fr. William Laska leading the Prayers of Committal.

I am very sorry to hear Dick has passed away. We worked together for r a short period of time in Punxsutawney and at the airport. Dick was always professional and represented himself as a very dedicated individual, no matter what he was doing.
He often was getting me caught up on what the family was doing, I believe it was the grandson swimming around the Statue of Liberty that we talked about at length. He will be missed by all that ever knew him.
I feel very sorry I can not attend his funeral due to my obligations at home.
God bless you and family
