Murl "John" Thurston, 95, of New Castle went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, July 27, 2022.He was born October 28, 1926 in Wayne County Kentucky to the late Murrell and Flora Mae (Clark) Thurston.
Following his discharge from the United States Army, John married Betty Jean Beck on June 27, 1948. They moved to New Castle and had two daughters, Connie Lynn (Blaise) Durbin and Beth Ann (Frank) Burkett.
John started his own business, Thurston's Seat Covers and Auto Upholstery, working well into his 80's before finally retiring. He was well known for the quality of his work.
He was an active member of Foursquare Gospel Church throughout his life, serving as a Sunday School Teacher, a congregational song leader and was extremely active in the Music Department, both singing and playing his bass guitar. John was a founding member of the Messengers of Hope Gospel Group.
John also liked to fish, but mainly enjoyed spending time with his daughters and their families, especially around the holidays.
He is survived by his wife, Betty Jean Thurston; two daughters, Connie Lynn (Blaise) Durbin and Beth Ann (Frank) Burkett; grandchildren, Michael (Fiancé Kelsey) Burkett, Patrick (Rachel) Enoch, Cale Durbin and Erica Wright; great grandson, Jase Enoch; grandson-in-law, Lee Terrell; siblings, Jim Thurston, Glen Thurston and Murlene Pyle; special niece, Tena Hoots, along with numerous other nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents John is preceded in death by a granddaughter, Tara (Enoch) Terrell; siblings, Alene Thurston, Kenneth Thurston, Louise Carter, Gene Thurston and Darrell Thurston.
Services will be at 2:00 pm Wednesday August 3, 2022 at Foursquare Gospel Church with Pastor Jim Becker officiating. Burial will follow at South Mound Cemetery West Lawn Addition. Visitation will be from Noon until the time of service.
