Rex William Anderson, 87, of New Castle, died Thursday evening, December 14, 2023, at Willows of New Castle.
He was born on November 28, 1936, in Worden, Illinois, the second son of the late Worden K. and Vera G. (Dorr) Anderson.
After graduating from High School in Worden, Rex enlisted in the US Army in 1955 and spent two years in Germany as a Morse Code Radio Operator. Upon release from active duty, Rex spent four years at Southern Illinois University in Carbondale, graduating with a BA in Liberal Arts, Business, and English. Rex was then employed by Standard Oil for eight years and was also affiliated with Amoco Oil Co in Rolla, MO, as a field manager. While in that job he met and married Patti C. Greene on September 26, 1964, and two sons were born while in Rolla, MO, David in 1967 and John in 1970.
In 1975, Rex and Patti moved with their family to Brandon, FL, and worked for Exxon Oil Co. In 1982 they moved to Mt. Summit, IN, where they purchased the apple orchard, which they operated for 20 years as Anderson's Apple Orchard. Rex and Patti were active in the Indiana Horticultural Society and the First Presbyterian Church in New Castle. Rex enjoyed golf and built his own course at their home at St. Road 3 and 36. He and Patti enjoyed traveling with the Horticultural Society to New Zealand.
Those left to cherish Rex's memory include his loving wife of 59 years, Patti Anderson; two sons, David (Carrie) Anderson and John (Julia) Anderson, both of New Castle; two grandchildren, Kyle Carl Anderson of Indianapolis and Evan Thomas Anderson of Dayton, OH; a brother, Paul (Carolyn) Anderson of Mooresville; a sister, Karen Brauer of Tucson, AZ, and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, December 19, 2023, at Sproles Family Funeral Home with Rev. Katherine Rieder officiating. Contingents from the US Army, the American Legion, and the VFW will conduct military funeral honors at the beginning of the funeral. Burial will be held privately at Mt. Summit Cemetery.
Friends may call from 12 p.m. until the time of service Tuesday at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be offered to the First Presbyterian Church, 1202 Church Street, New Castle, IN, 47362, with envelopes available at the funeral home or a charity of your choice. You may offer the family a personal condolence at www.sprolesfamily cares.com.
