Robert "Bob" Allen Mathes, 74, of New Castle passed away Monday, Feb. 6, 2023, at The Waters of Castleton. He was born Nov. 27, 1948, in New Castle, to the late Elbert and Bertha (Alexander) Mathes.
Bob grew up in New Castle and attended Sugar Grove United Methodist Church. He was a 1967 graduate of New Castle Chrysler High School then earned his Bachelor's degree and Master's in Education degree from Ball State University. Bob taught at Shenandoah High School for nearly 10 years where he was a well-loved teacher. Following his time teaching, he operated the Laboratory at the Henry County Clinic for many years then moved to IU Health Ball Hospital as a Medical Technician until his retirement in 2016. Bob was also a caretaker for his mother until her passing. He loved playing the trumpet, nature, bowling in many leagues, and watching the Fort Wayne TinCaps.
He is survived by his brother, Garry Mathes; nephew, Clint (Tiana) Mathes; niece, Kris Mathes (Mark Schmitz); great nieces and nephews, Gavin, Landen and Piper; aunts and uncles, Don (Joan) Alexander, Judith (Wally) Alexander-Hanson; cousins, Karen Mathes and Kathy Noel; close friends, Kay Sites and Marlys Church and several other aunts, uncles, cousins and close friends.
He is preceded in death by his parents.
The family would like to express their gratitude to the Doctors and staff of The Waters of Castleton and hospice.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday, Feb. 10 at Hinsey-Brown Funeral Service in New Castle. Burial will follow at South Mound Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5-8 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 9 at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Paradigm Hospice, 8904 Bash St., Suite B, Indianapolis, IN 46256 or an organization of the donor's choice.
