Joan K. Pitel

Hopewell Township - Joan K. Pitel (nee Fisher), passed away peacefully in the presence of her family on Saturday, May 22, 2021 at Inspira Medical Center in Vineland, N.J. She was 80 years old.

Born March 28, 1941, she graduated from Bridgeton High School and attended college in Florida. The daughter of the late Elmer and Naomi A. (Smith) Fisher, she was the wife of Dr. Gary Pitel, whom she was married to for 59 years. She was a longtime resident of Hopewell Township.

Joan devoted her life to raising her two sons, Steven and Scott and worked in her husband's dental practice as the office administrator. She enjoyed traveling to a number of places throughout her life, including St Maarten, The Bahamas, Hilton Head, Bermuda, Puerto Rico, Aruba, Israel, and Jamaica.

She was a member of Congregation Beth Abraham in Bridgeton and its successor, Beth Abraham/Beth Hillel in Carmel. She was also a member of Hadassah and the Women's League Sisterhood.

Joan loved spending time with her family, especially many summers in Sea Isle City. Her favorite hobbies included playing tennis and mahjong with her friends.

In addition to her beloved husband, Gary, she is survived by her two loving sons; Steve Pitel and his wife Jennifer of Newtown, PA and Scott Pitel and his fiancé Stephanie Weber of Pittsgrove; her adoring grandchildren, Madison and Olivia Pitel and soon-to-be grandchildren, Ava Laughlin and Sophia Woods. Joan is also survived by her stepmother, Esther Fisher of Hopewell Twp., her sister, Brenda Glaspey (Ken) of Greenwich, a stepbrother, Jay Fisher of Bridgeton, two stepsisters, Jenn Fisher-Jespersen and Susan Fisher Etherton, both of Bridgeton, several nieces and nephews, and other members of the Pitel family.

A private graveside service and burial will be held at Alliance Cemetery in Norma. Rabbi Bradley Bleefeld of Congregation Beth Abraham / Beth Hillel will officiate.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made in Joan's name to the Crohn's & Colitis Foundation at www.crohnscolitisfoundation.org/JoanPitelMemorial

Dr. Pitel and family,
I didn't know Joan. My grandmother resided next door to your dental office. I feel as though you were a friend, albeit by proximity. You were a part of my childhood, Dr. Pitel. I'm so deeply sorry for your loss, condolences to your family.
