Samuel Herdman, 88, of Millville went home to the Lord on Monday, Dec. 3, 2012.
Born May 6, 1924, he was the last surviving child of Samuel and Sophia Herdman, who immigrated to America through Ellis Island in 1914.
Mr. Herdman is survived by his loving wife of 68 years, Eleanor. He is also survived by their children, Diane Herdman Pogue and husband Thomas of Estell Manor, and Samuel Herdman and wife Vicki of Millville; his grandchildren, Creed Pogue and wife Rebecca of Estell Manor, Eli Pogue and wife Carrie of Estell Manor, Lea Herdman Flanagan and husband Kevin of King of Prussia, Pa., and Samuel Herdman and wife Keri of Millville; and his great-grandchildren, Eli and Mae from Eli and Carrie; Kaitlyn, Kieran and Brian from Lea and Kevin; and Grace and Samuel from Samuel and Keri. He is also survived by his sisters-in-law, Ann Herdman, Annette Herdman, Emily Herdman, Edith Burns of Millville, Audrey Johnson of Florida, Louise Sherman of Millville; as well as, many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brothers and sisters, Mildred, John, Joseph, Peter, Walter, Steven, Kathryn and Charles.
He worked as a conductor of freight for the Pennsylvania Railroad and its corporate successors. He also had a home business of television and radio repair. He enjoyed traveling on the railroad and by van with Eleanor and friends. He was an active member of West Side United Methodist Church, serving as a Lay Member to Annual Conference, Lay Leader, Church Council Chair and many other positions of service to the Kingdom. In addition to being a teacher of Sunday School, he was also a Certified Lay Speaker. Service to those in need was a large part of Sam's life, and he was a longtime lead volunteer for the Food Closet run by Help and Hope Ministries of the Millville Ministerium.
The viewing will be on Friday at 10 a.m. at Christy Funeral Home, 11 W. Broad St., Millville, followed by the funeral service at 11 a.m. Burial will be in Mount Pleasant Cemetery. Mourners will be received at West Side UMC, 216 Howard St., Millville, after the burial for a time of remembrance.
