Sophie (Sue) Manduke, 83, passed away on Aug. 7, 2010, at the Bishop McCarthy Residence in Vineland.
Born in New York City as Sophie Paranych, her parents moved to Dorothy when she was young and she grew up on a chicken farm there. Though her given name was Sophie, she preferred to be called Sue and was primarily known by that name throughout her life. While in high school, her family moved to Millville. She graduated from Millville High School in 1944. She worked for Metropolitan Life Insurance Company as a young woman, but quit work to raise her children after she married.
A devoted Catholic throughout her life, she was active in several Millville parishes, including St. Nicholas Ukrainian Catholic Church, St. Mary Magdalen Catholic Church and St. John Bosco Catholic Church. She was certified by the Catholic Church as a CCD teacher and taught religious education at the St. Nicholas Ukrainian Catholic Parish for a number of years. She was also a member of the Association of Laity in Apostolate of Mercy (ALAM), the lay association of the Daughters of Mercy, who taught school at St. Mary Magdalen's. While her children attended St. Mary Magdalen School, Sue was active in the PTA and Cub Scouting.
In her later years, Sue worked for several companies, including West Company, Prudential Insurance and Wawa Markets. She served as a hostess at the Down Jersey Folklife Center in Wheaton Village, Millville, where she provided illumination on the local Ukrainian culture. She was known for her creative abilities with Pysanky (Ukrainian Easter eggs) and traditional Ukrainian embroidery.
Sue is survived by a brother, Edward Paranych of Millville; four children, Mark Manduke of Ashburn, Va., John Manduke of Millville, Valerie Marks of Deptford and the Very Rev. Nikolai (Joseph) Manduke of Millville; five grandchildren and a great-grandchild.
There will be a viewing from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday evening at Barr Funeral Home, 2104 E. Main St., Millville. Relatives and friends will meet at 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Nicholas Ukrainian Catholic Church, 801 Carmel Road, Millville, where the funeral Mass will be conducted.
Burial will follow in the St. Nicholas Ukrainian Catholic Church Cemetery.

Dear Mark, John, Valerie, Joe and family,
I was so sorry to hear of Sue's passing. She shared many of her talents with me over the years when we were close. She taught me the crafts mentioned here, pysanky and Ukrainian embroidery. She also shared some of her favorite recipes with me but I could never make them as tasty as she did. My beautiful gardenia, the envy of many a plant lover, was grown from a cutting from her plant. May your fond memories of her comfort you at this time. Love, Cindy
