Agnes Cunha Obituary

Groton - Our mother was definitely a force! Agnes E. Cunha of Groton passed away early Friday morning Dec. 15, 2023. She was born in Westerly, R.I., March 5, 1943, to the late Atwood I. Williams Jr. (Grand Chief Sachem Leaping Deer of the Eastern Pequot Tribe) and Helen Murphy Williams. She was the sixth of seven children.

She was loved by so many for her wisdom, courage and tenacity. Agnes was a very passionate champion for her tribal community and heritage. She served for many years on the Tribal Council of the Eastern Pequot Tribe of Connecticut. She left behind an abundance of research and knowledge, and we are all so very sad and grieving the loss of this incredible woman.

Agnes is survived by three children, James A Cunha Jr. and his husband Caleb Williams of Springbrook, TWP, Pa., Lisa R. Cuff of Groton, and Christine C. Meisner and her husband Kevin W. Meisner of Uncasville. She is also survived by her five grandchildren: Ryan S. Parker, Ashley Batzer, Zachary Meisner and wife Madison Meisner, James Parker and fiancé Samantha Carey and Jacob Meisner.

The family has decided on a private burial.

I'm so sad to hearing of Agnes' passing. Yes, what a strong, smart, and dedicated Native woman she was. I'm happy to have met her, laughed with her, talked about her concern for her tribal community and family. She was a wonderful person. My sincerest sympathy to all the family, especially Chrissy, Kevin, and Jimmy. My prayers for you all as you grieve your loss. Hugs from New Mexico

Jim, Chrissy, Lisa & Families,
We were so saddened to hear of your Mom´s passing last week. I always loved being with her and her spunk. She was so helpful in providing us with the genealogy of the Eastern & Western sides of the Pequots. She even had all l the photos; but most important, all the stories (and there were many.) Mike cherished all the good times visiting the family when they lived near Rocky Point.
RIP Agnes, you are gone but never forgotten.
Love Mike & Lori Holder

Oh, Chrisie and Lisa, our hearts are broken when we saw the Newspaper on Tuesday. One of the first, hallway residents to greet me when I first moved in, and she continued to do. Agnes was an active, supportive Member of her tribe. We shared similar Committee Boards, Secretary Reports, weekly meetings. I think she and I were the only ones to come home with a notebook under our arm many days. She continued her kindness to us even when I moved, and in helping Marc to furnish his new home.
Thank you girls for sharing her with us.

Barbara and Marc Frucht.
