Allan Atwood Obituary

New London - Allan H. Atwood, Jr., 56, died quietly in his sleep on May 3, 2010, at his home in New London.

Son of Elizabeth B. Atwood of Topsham, ME, and the late Allan H. Atwood, Sr., he was born on September 16, 1953, in Alexandria, VA.

A graduate of Old Lyme High School in 1971, he attended the University of Connecticut and went on to work at Electric Boat, and later at McLaughlin Research Corporation and General Physics as a technical illustrator.

Allan Atwood was larger than life. He will be remembered for many things, among them his wit and humor, his great generosity, and his passion for life. A gifted artist and avid reader, he also loved entertaining, gourmet cooking, music, the performing arts, and gaming with friends. With his innate wisdom, he mentored many and always gave deeply of himself. He took care to be thoughtful of everyone he knew.

We will sorely miss our son, brother, uncle and friend. And we will always remember his laughter.

In addition to his mother, Allan is survived by one sister, Elizabeth M. Atwood of Redmond, WA, and one brother, Christopher B. Atwood of New London. He also leaves a nephew, Nathaniel A. Hall and wife Holly J. Hall of Lynwood, WA, a niece, Elizabeth C. Hall of Scottsdale, AZ, and many aunts, uncles and cousins.

A Celebration of Life is planned for later in the year.

Hoopla!

I will miss you terribly, Al. I know you would hate anything overly maudlin, so I'll restrain myself. I was privileged to have known you, and honored to have been your friend and student. I'll never forget you.

My deepest condolences to family and friends. We were all lucky to have had him in our lives.

Distance meant we saw one another less; your place in my heart meant distance didn't matter. I cannot express how pivotal "Tanta Bym" was in my life - except to say that I am still teaching other people the lessons he taught me.

Hoopla, treacle, and rolling dice like a thunder god. A booming laugh, tying his beard with bows, and solstice parties. What I think I remember most is having tea at the table.

Luck on your journey, my friend. I'll see you there.

Allan and I met in the Society for Creative Anachronism
during my Freshman year in college.

Curmudgeon even at 18, he became my dearest friend.

Later as "Uncle Bim",  he was a larger-than-life figure to my children,
and will without doubt become a legend to theirs.

My deepest sympathy to family and friends.

I miss you my friend.
I miss your wit, your art, and your magic.

Good journey.

Dear Chris and the entire Atwood Family,

Though I've never met your brother, I've worked, over many years, with both you (Chris) and your dad at EB in Tech Pubs.

To Mrs. Atwood, it's always tragic losing a child at any age...sincerest prayers for strength 'n' peace.

Understanding the hole left behind, regardless the inevitability or forewarning, pray this helps some wee bit...to allow...enable…the grief! So truly sorry to hear about your son and brother. At least now he’s at peace with our Lord…definitely keepin’ y’all in our prayers!

When my mother died, even after a years-long battle with cancer, I was shattered by the loss…inconsolable…she was my mentor! I like to think that I got my character from my father, but my mind and its capacity from m’dear sainted mother!!! BUT, "If your faith assures you she's in heaven, then what are the tears all about?!?" I hold eternity dearly close...a cherished, hard-won prize...but, in the interim, that answer lies below.

SELFISH TEARS
(I Eulogize My Beloved Mother - March, 1989)

Today we cry...must admit they're selfish tears.
You see...our faith assures your journey's done.
But it's not for you we mourn, at all, my dear;
It's for those of us you've left behind...alone!!!

We share your joy...share your happiness at rest,
Your painful fears now for forever stilled.
You've fought the good fight, passed the final test,
But you've left behind a hole that can't be filled!!!

So, until we each rejoin you some someday,
And, while your memory buoys us through those years,
We'll miss you...but continue on our way,
And, from time to time, we'll cry our selfish tears!!!

I am not there, I do not sleep.
I am a thousand winds that blow;
I am the diamond glints on the snow.
I am the sunlight that ripened grain;
I am the gentle autumns’s rain.
When you awaken in the morning’s hush,
I am the swift uplifting rush,
Of quiet birds in circled flight.
I am the soft star that shines at night.
Do not stand at my grave and cry.
I am not there; I did not die
