Anne Daugherty Obituary

Montville - Anne (Matzul) Potari Daugherty, formerly of Uncasville, passed away May 5, 2009, in Vancouver, Wash.

She was born Sept. 27, 1921, in Uncasville, the daughter of the late Alexander Matzul and Mary Urichnica. Anne attended grade school in Uncasville and was a 1939 graduate of Williams Memorial Institute.

She married Joseph Potari Sept. 28, 1940. He passed away in 1961. In 1964, she married Carl Daugherty, who passed away in 1968. She was also predeceased by her siblings, Michael, Nicholas, Olga, and Fredrick.

In 1939, Anne worked for Shelton Looms until the mill closed. She then worked for about a year at the U.S. Coast Guard Training Station in Groton. In 1962, she was accepted at the Montville Correctional Center as a corrections officer and then transferred to the Niantic Correctional Institution, where she retired after 23 years of service. She used to tell her grandchildren stories about people who wound up in jail for violating the law and how some of them had to learn their lesson the hard way.

Wherever Anne was employed, her co-workers would always say kind words about her. Her friends would recall how she sincerely cared for others. She was always a hospitable, generous, and unselfish person. She moved to Vancouver, Wash., in September 2007 to be with her family.

Anne is survived by her daughter, Arlene Villaluz and husband, Danny; her grandchildren, Ding Villaluz and partner, Penny Kelly, Ann Marie Harris and husband, Doug, Christine Matthias and husband, Ben, Joseph Villaluz and wife, Marilyn Rodriguez, and Nicole Chandler and husband, Josh; and her great-grandchildren, Abigail Troffer, Emma and Mariana Villaluz, and Sidney and Jacob Chandler.

The family would like to thank both her caregiver, Josie Mendoza, who cared for her until her death and also her nephew, Dennis Rolfe, who was a great help while she lived by herself in Quaker Hill. There are also other nephews and nieces who touched her life. Anne will definitely be missed by her loved ones, especially for the kindness and easy-going way of life she afforded everyone.

Calling hours will be held from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. on Friday, May 15, at the Montville Funeral Home of Church and Allen. The funeral will assemble at 10 a.m. on Saturday, May 16, at the funeral home and proceed to a funeral service at the Quaker Hill Baptist Church at 11 a.m. Burial will follow in Cedar Grove Cemetery, New London.

The Montville Funeral Home of Church and Allen, 53 Route 32, Montville, is entrusted with arrangements.
