Anthony James "Tony" Morrison

1938 - 2022

Waterford - Anthony James "Tony" Morrison, 84, of Waterford, passed away unexpectedly at home the morning of May 23, 2022, with his wife at his side. He was born March 2, 1938, in Stoneham, Mass., to Kenneth and Augusta Ellingsen Morrison; and grew up in Framingham, Mass.

Tony graduated from Worcester Polytechnic Institute with a degree in mechanical engineering and was hired by the Hartford Electric Light Company in Berlin. During college, he met his wife of 63 years, Helen Kelly of Jamaica Plain (Boston), Mass.; and they wed in November 1959.

When he was transferred to New London, in 1962, Tony and Helen moved to Waterford, where they raised their children and have lived ever since. He spent his career with the same company through its many iterations and retired from the Yankee Gas Division of C.L.& P. (now Eversource) in 1995.

After retirement, Tony and his wife pursued their antiques business, traveling on buying trips and exhibiting at shows where they made many friends. He loved eating out, and they would find a favorite restaurant every place they went. Tony was also an avid reader of detective novels, seeking out new releases by his favorite authors at all the local libraries. He was an active member of the Society of Gas Operators and more recently was serving on the board of directors for Eastern Connecticut Housing Opportunities. Tony was a big sports fan, enjoyed watching any type of sports, especially baseball. He never missed an Atlanta Braves game, his favorite team since he was young, and they played in Boston. He coached Little League and was often on the sidelines of any game his children and grandchildren were playing. Tony golfed, was in bowling and softball leagues for years and was still coaching men's softball in Waterford.

In addition to his wife Helen; Tony is survived by his four children: Kelly and her partner Eric Couture of Groton, David and his wife Susan (Skelly) of Waterford, Christian of Shelton and Timothy and his wife Sara (Kovarovics) of Wellfleet, Mass.; five grandchildren: Sean, Julie, Jack, William and Lula; and his brother David of Hendersonville, N.C.

His family would like to thank the Goshen Fire Department and the Waterford Police for their kindness and assistance as well as Tony's doctors who cared for him in his later years, including Terrance Doherty, Jaime Gerber, Steven Schoenberger and Jason Haldas.

Calling hours will be held from 6 yo 8 p.m. Tuesday, May 31, at the Thomas L. Neilan & Sons Funeral Home, 12 Ocean Ave., New London. Burial will be private. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Special Olympics Connecticut or Eastern Connecticut Housing Opportunities, New London.
