He was born on Oct. 4, 1913 in Bronx, N.Y., son of the late Bernard and Nellie McCann.
On July 2, 1937 he married Dorothy Arnold McCann. She survives him.
Mr. McCann led a rewarding and full life. He was in the CCC's during the depression and worked at the Brooklyn Navy Yard as a steamfitter during World War II. After the war, he worked as a steamfitter on many construction projects in and around New York City including the Twin Towers. Barney was a volunteer fireman all of his life, being captain of the North Bellmore Fire Co. No. 2 in the 1950's and was a fire inspector for Nassau County on Long Island in the 1960's. He retired in 1970. Barney was an Eagle Scout and was active in scouting for much of his adult life.
In addition to his wife of 69 years, Dorothy, he is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, John and Iris McCann, of Ledyard, a son, Thomas and his wife, Tina, of Lafayette, Ind.; four grandsons, Michael, Brian, Christopher and Timothy and a granddaughter, Carol; four great-grandchildren, and a great-great-granddaughter.
A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Catherine's of Siena RC Church, Preston on Friday at 11a.m. Burial will follow in Elm Grove Cemetery, Mystic.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Fairview Nursing Home whose nurses and aides provide such special care.
