Betsy Tal was a unique spirit in this world. Her bright and spontaneous energy touched everyone she met. We have known each other for almost 50 years in various ways. We have always felt a close bond whenever we met. She always brought beauty and laughter everywhere. Betsy has lived many "chapters" in her life, and in many places - Waterford CT, Massachusetts, Washington, NC, California, Litchfield, Norwich and New London, CT, and most recently, "commuting" weekly between Chaplin and Quaker Hill CT.
She has always touched and charmed people she met, even people in restaurants, and the couple selling apple crisp around the corner.. She loved studying nature as well as human interactions. Betsy had strong feelings about the future of our country and it´s people. It has been a challenging few years for her as she underwent treatment for lung cancer and then after she stopped treatment suffering the development of her disease, but I never saw her angry or despondent about her journey with cancer and her medical personnel were always happy to see her. Everyone always felt good around her as I did.
It was such an honor and pleasure to know her for all these many years, and to be even closer these last four years as she spent time here in Chaplin and later both in Chaplin and Quaker Hill. Happy, my cat loved to sit on her lap and fall asleep with her which was a large part of each day, always calling for and looking for her when she was not here. Sometimes I joked about having two sleeping cats.
Betsy will be missed by many people and very much by her circle of "first Friday"women friends as well as her long time very close friends, Paul and myself. She was one of a kind.

My condolences to Betsy's family. I didn't know Betsy, but my husband Stuart (who died 5/12/25) was a cousin. Betsy's mother, well-known to me as Aunt Hazel, was Stuart's beloved Aunt. She accompanied Stuart on a trip to Hong Kong decades ago and they had a blast. I hope Stuart and Betsy and Aunt Hazel meet up in heaven. Best wishes and love, Susie Kent

To Betsy's loved ones,
Betsy and I were childhood friends and we too, explored the woods behind her home with great joy! It seems as if Betsy found her path and joy in art and was at peace with her fate. That is a gift.

Betsy and I grew up together on Butler town Rd. We spent lots of time in the woods behind her house and my house building forts, making dams in the brooks, catching turtles and sneaking cigarettes. We also had idyllic days of bike riding when kids could pack up PB&J sandwiches and be gone all day. We rode to Lakes Pond and to the store in Chesterfield for penny candy. We reconnected in highschool when she would give me rides to basketball games. In our 20s we'd periodically connect but then lost touch. Interestingly, I tried to contact Betsy in the last month, but was unsuccessful. Little did I know she was having her best bike ride ever to a place of peace. Love to you Betsy.
