Catherine Nott Obituary

Groton - Catherine R. Nott (otherwise known as Cass to family and friends), age 63, of Groton, left this world way too soon and entered eternal peace Sunday, May 26, 2024, at Bride Brook Rehabilitation Center in Niantic, after a hard-fought battle with Acute Myeloid Leukemia. She was not ready to go and we were not ready to lose her.

Cass was a fighter from birth being born prematurely a the Naval Sub Base Hospital in Groton, Sept. 3, 1960, She was the daughter of Charles and Marion Brazee who predeceased her; along with her brothers, Scotty and Steven. Cass is survived by her pride and joy - her daughters, Bethany Penza (husband CJ) of Groton, and Albrey Nott (partner Richard) of Red House, Va.; her brother Dale Brazee (wife Kimmy) of Groton; and her sister and best friend Cindy Smith (husband Curt) of Front Royal, Va. Most importantly, she leaves behind her two beloved grandsons, Jose Nott and FJ Cavaleri. They meant everything good in life and she loved them with all her heart and soul. She also leaves behind her nieces, Jenifer Gleason and Courney Smith; and her nephews, Matthew Smith, Brian Brazee and Hunter Brazee.

For many years she had worked as a sale associate at A. C. Moore. Once she left A.C. Moore, she went to work at CT Quilt Works. There her passion became hand applique, English paper piercing and quilting. Once she could no longer work, she took up her many hobbies: cross stitching and hand sewing, just to name a few.

We remember Cass who always had a smile on her face and would be friends with any and all no matter how troubled or sick she was. That's what made her so special.

The family would like to thank the medical team at Yale, Dr. Podoltsev and Dr. Lattanzi, along with the staff at Smilow Medical Center. Also, the family would like to give a special thank you to Gina and Gerry Peters who always treated Cass like family. You were always there for her and for that we are profoundly grateful. And to Pam Carroll, her Bingo partner in crime! You lifted her up and as we all know, Cass loved her Bingo whether she won or lost. It was her Bingo buddies whom she enjoyed being with most!

A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, June 6, at Elm Grove Cemetery, Mystic. There are no visiting hours. Please visit www.byles.com to sign the guestbook or share a memory with the family.

I had the pleasure of teaching Catherine when she was in 2nd grade. She was a very sweet little girl and we reconnected when I met her playing bingo at the ELKS in Groton. May she be at peace now.

My deepest sympathy to her loving family. I knew mama Cass we worked together at Acmoore for 8 years and she always checked on me and my growing family. She was a sweet and caring woman and treated us all like her own. Thinking of you all during this time.

Cass, you left us all way too soon! I´m lost without you but knowing you are pain free is a somewhat of a comfort! You fought the battle and exceeded everyone´s expectations. I know it wasn´t easy. We always had so much fun together. Fly high Cass and watch over us all! I will see you in every sunset and full moon! I love you more, forever and always.
