David Wingard Obituary

Old Lyme - David Gregory "Greg" Wingard passed away in Old Lyme, at the home he shared with his wife and life partner, Marcia, Sunday, Sept. 25, 2022, surrounded by family and under the care of hospice. Greg was born Nov. 20, 1941, to the late Bowman Wingard and Louise (Murphy) Wingard.

He lived a life full of achievements, of which he was too modest to speak, but which confirmed to those who knew him what a talented, intelligent, inquisitive and caring person he was. Greg took immense pride in his work and professionalism. Over more than five decades in the aerospace manufacturing industry, he travelled across the United States, and the world, managed complex projects, and mentored uncounted colleagues in their own professional development. Greg began this work when he was only seventeen years old in the G.E. Apprenticeship Program, which he credited for giving him an excellent technical education; and he subsequently completed his education at Northeastern University. Over the course of his career, he worked at several firms, retiring as general manager at Ambel Precision Manufacturing Company. Even after he retired, Greg's expertise was respected and sought after; and he continued to work as a consultant source inspector well into his seventies. However, Greg's life was not consumed by work. He and Marcia travelled widely across the United States, to the Caribbean, and several times to Europe. They also lived in Venice, Fla., for part of the year.

Greg loved sharing stories and humor with friends, neighbors, and family near and far. Anyone who knew Greg also knew of his love of cars and all things automotive. He was an avid car enthusiast, taking meticulous care of his vehicles, helping his family members care for theirs, and too often, picking up the next "great deal," a hobby which occasionally even turned a profit. More than these achievements, Greg's life was enriched by his family. He frequently talked about how lucky he was to share a life with his children and Marcia's children and how grateful he was for them. He was in turn loved by so many.

Greg is survived by his wife and partner of over thirty years, Marcia Webb-Wingard of Connecticut and Florida; his children and their spouses: Geoffrey Wingard and Jennifer of Maine, Brett Wingard and Ellen of Massachusetts, Sherri Strandy and Dan of Oregon, and Gretchen Griffin and Tim of Florida, and his step-daughters, Lisa Mentlick and her husband Doug, Cynthia Domonkos, Susan Webb-Zajac and her husband Christopher, and Laura Wilkerson, all of Connecticut. Greg was the proud grandfather of twenty-one grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. He was loved and loved them all.

Calling hours will be held from 5 until 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 30, at Fulton Theroux Funeral Service located at 13 Beckwith Lane, Old Lyme. A funeral Mass will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 1, at Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church located at 1055 Randolph Road, Middletown. The family would like to extend a special thank you to Hartford Homecare Hospice-Norwich Office.
