Denis O'Brien Obituary

Mystic - Denis O'Brien, 68, of Mystic, passed away peacefully June 24, 2025, at Yale New Haven Hospital, surrounded by his loving family, due to complications from cancer. Denis was born Feb. 20, 1957, in New York, N.Y., the son of John and Eileen O'Brien, who both predeceased him.

He grew up on Staten Island, N.Y., and graduated from Monsignor Farrell High School. He earned his undergraduate degree from SUNY Oneonta and completed his M.B.A. at Binghamton University.

Denis spent over four decades in finance, beginning his career on Wall Street. He worked with several financial institutions before founding his own firm, O'Brien Retirement, in 2014. Under his leadership, the firm flourished - built on a foundation of trust, integrity and genuine care for his clients. One of his proudest moments was when his youngest son, Beau, joined the business.

In 1989, Denis met the love of his life, Lori Wolf. They were married in 1991, and settled in Mystic, where they built a warm and lively home filled with laughter, love and the energy of their three boys, Cutter, Justin and Beau and one loyal beagle, Daisy. Denis was a deeply devoted father, the kind who never missed a game, school event, or milestone - no matter how big or small.

Proud of his Irish roots, Denis traveled to Ireland many times and embraced his heritage fully. He and Lori shared a love of travel, whether exploring Europe or visiting Lori's hometown of Abilene, Texas. He found great joy in the outdoors, especially hiking and white-water rafting in the American West. A passionate sports fan, he cheered for the Yankees, the Patriots, and his beloved UConn Huskies, where he held men's basketball season tickets for many years.

Denis had a deep love of music, with tastes ranging from country to classic rock, but his favorite band, without question, was the Allman Brothers. At family gatherings and holiday celebrations, he was even known to break out his accordion and fill the room with music, much to the delight (and occasional amusement) of those around him.

Another highlight of Denis's life was hosting his own radio show. While the program focused on finance, his wit, warmth and wisdom made it just as much about life. Over the years, he built a loyal following. His son Beau later joined him on the air and will continue the show in his honor.

Denis is survived by his loving wife of 34 years, Lori; his sons, Cutter (Nicole), Justin (Agnes) and Beau; and his adored granddaughters, Harper, Piper and Poppy. He is also survived by his father-in-law Paul Wolf; sister-in-law Linda (Ed Daingerfield); niece Caitlin; sisters, Jean and Loretta (Mike); brothers, John (Liza) and Tom (Michele); and many nieces, nephews, and close friends. He was predeceased by his brother Rich (Julie).

A Wake will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday, June 29, at the Dinoto Funeral Home, 17 Pearl Street, Mystic. A funeral service will take place at 10 a.m. Monday, June 30, at St. Mark's Episcopal Church, 15 Pearl Street in Mystic, followed by burial at Elm Grove Cemetery in Mystic. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Cancer Society in memory of Denis.
