A native American of Mohegan descent, Mrs. Hilliard was born on Oct. 24, 1910 in Pomfret, the daughter of Berry and Maude Congdon Jackson.
She was married on Nov. 16, 1943 to Arthur Hilliard who died in 1975.
During World War II Mrs. Hilliard worked as a welder at the Federal Shipbuilding and Dry Dock Co., in Kearny, N.J. She worked at Beekman-Downtown Hospital in New York before her retirement. Mrs. Hilliard was a member of the former New London congregation of Jehovah's Witnesses.
She is survived by two sons, David Hilliard of Denver, Colo., and Gary Hilliard of Alexandria, Va.; a daughter, Linda Hilliard of New London; a sister, Louise Whitford of Quaker Hill; two brothers, William Jackson of Groton and Louis Jackson of Norwich; and six grandchildren.
She was predeceased by her brothers, Sylvester, James, Robert and Edmund Jackson; and sisters, Mabel Gilliam, Eliza Brown and Lena Greene.
The funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 14, 2008 at the Fulton-Theroux Funeral Home, 181 Ocean Ave., New London, followed by burial in Cedar Grove Cemetery, New London. Calling hours will be from 6 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 13, 2008 at the funeral home.
