Dorothy Kay Obituary

Groton - Dorothy A. Kay, 94, of Groton, passed peacefully Monday, Sept. 8, 2025, surrounded by loved ones. She was the daughter of the late Frederick S. Withey Sr. and Anne K. Withey and a 1949 graduate of Robert E. Fitch Sr. High School in Groton.

Growing up in Groton, and later raising her children in Mystic, Dorothy loved living in this area. She often reminisced about her childhood days, including the hurricane of 1938. She was a big fan of the UConn Huskies women's basketball team and PGA golf. She loved a good book, a classic movie, doing puzzles and playing Scrabble. Some of Dorothy's favorite memories included sight-seeing in London with her grandson, traveling to Vegas to visit her brother and his family, and of course, annual family picnics and holidays when everyone could be together.

Dorothy is survived by her six children: Sheila (Mike) Collins of Cape May, N.J., Dianne (Mark) Larson of Westerly, R.I., Bobby Kay of Mystic, April (Mike) Sauchuk of Pawcatuck, Kathy (Don) LaBonte of N. Stonington, and Colleen (Bob) Greenlee of Mystic. She also leaves behind grandchildren: Andrew and Jeremy Madden, James (Maarja) Larson, Laura (Chris) Hardee, Kate (Bryan) Hall, and Lindsey and Jacci Greenlee; great-grandchildren: Chassidy, Allyn, Shanelle and D'Nae Sheffield, Matthew and Jacob Hardee, and Hailey, Bryson and Madelyn Hall; along with one niece and several nephews whom she held very close. She was predeceased by her infant son, David C. Kay; an infant grandson, Joseph M. Sauchuk; her former husband and father to her children, William L. Kay; her second mother Hattie Withey; sister Eleanor W. Burke; and her brother Frederick S. Withey Jr.

The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to Rose, Karen and Jackie of Companions and Homemakers for the loving care and happiness they gave Dorothy during the last years of her life.

A Celebration of her Life will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Oct. 3, at Union Baptist Church of Mystic. Interment will be private. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Union Baptist Church Garden of Life, 119 High Street, Mystic, Ct. 06355.
