Edith Swatzburg Obituary

Norwich - On Sunday, Nov. 27, Edith Swatzburg passed away surrounded by family at Lawrence + Memorial Hospital.

She is survived by her sister Harriet Gere, husband Michael Gere; two daughters, Susan Mackie of Niantic and Marcie Blaise, husband Brian Blaise of Colchester. Edith has three grandchildren, Michael Mackie, wife Melissa Mackie, and Danielle and Jessica Blaise; and three great-grandchildren, Madison, Calvin, and Elizabeth Mackie.

Edie was born in Yonkers, N.Y., April 23, 1936, to Dorothy and Stanley Friedman. She would later attend the University of Connecticut to earn her teaching degree and graduated in 1958. A year after graduating in 1959 she married Alvin Swatzburg and later divorced. She continued her education to earn her master's in education 1972 at UConn.

She later worked at Norwich Free Academy for a short time then to Colchester to teach business, typing and was a guidance counselor until her retirement in 1996. After retirement she couldn't stay idle and worked for H&R Block.

In her spare time Edie enjoyed traveling to different places with friends and family. She was also able to travel to Israel. She was an avid Bridge and Mahjong player. She earned her Silver Life Master in Bridge. Edie loved watching the UConn women's basketball and going to the Mohegan Sun's games.

Funeral services will be held 10 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 30, at Norwich Hebrew Benevolent Cemetery, 62 Middle Rd, Preston. Byles Memorial Home, 99 Huntington St., New London is assisting the family. Please visit www.Byles.com to sign the guestbook, share a memory or for directions.
