Born in Bayonne, N.J., on July 22, 1913, she is the daughter of the late Charles and Sarah (Allen) Voorhees.
Mrs. Hughes is survived by her daughter, Ann, and her husband Doug Soper, her son, David, and his wife Betsey Hughes; six grandchildren, Nell Soper, Molly Soper Forbes, Corey Soper, Lindsey Soper, Sarah Hughes and Kit Hughes; and one great-granddaughter, Finley Hughes.
Mrs. Hughes was a long time resident of Old Saybrook, living on Cromwell Court for 40 years before moving to Essex Meadows with her husband Jerry in 2002. She was active in the Old Saybrook Garden Club and Historical Society and was a frequent volunteer for the American Red Cross Town Blood Drive. For many years she served as a "Gray Lady" in military hospitals here and in the Philippine Islands. She was well known as a competitive bridge player and had a strong love of flowers.
Family and friends are invited to visit the Swan Funeral Home, 1224 Boston Post Rd., Old Saybrook, from 5 to 7 p.m., on July 2, 2008. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m., on July 3, 2008 at Our Lady of Sorrows Church, 14 Prospect St. in Essex. Burial will follow at Riverside Cemetery, on Sheffield St. in Old Saybrook.
Mrs. Hughes led a powerfully blessed and exciting life as a military wife of 66 years. She made many cross country trips during World War II to follow her husband's ship to its ports of call. She had a sharp wit that will forever bring a chuckle to those who knew her well. She will be missed each and every day by those who loved and cared for her.Although she was married to a Navy Captain, those who knew her realized that she was the Admiral.

Ann and Family, and David:
So sorry to hear about you Mom. I have such fond memories of spending time with you, Ann, during high school, at your home and of your Mom and Dad and their patience and kindness always. I will not soon forget Cromwell Court and Mrs. Hughes.
With love,

I will carry the fondest memories of Mrs. Hughes, Grandma Evelyn (and yes, little Eva too). They are among the very best from my early teenage years. I will treasure them and remember all the fun we had.
Love always, Pat
