Gail T. Garill

Milton, Fla. - Gail T. Rogan Garill, 82, of Milton, Fla. passed away from COVID-related illness Wednesday, Dec. 16, 2020. She was born April 9, 1938, in New London, the daughter of Peter J. Rogan and Lina (Forster) Rogan.

She spent her childhood growing up on her beloved Fishers Island, N.Y., where she enjoyed singing and dancing and spending time with her family at the beach. After graduation from high school, she served in the U.S. Navy as a WAVE where she met her former spouse, Christopher Garill. Together, they had five children and lived in several duty stations including Newport Rhode Island, Nagasaki Japan, and New London. In her later years, Gail lived in Florida to be closer to her adult children.

During her career as a single mother, she worked for the New London and Norwich Court Houses as a court stenographer and then worked for the State of Connecticut as a caregiver for the developmentally different.

A highlight of her retirement was her trip to Germany to the town of Solingen where her mother was from and her relatives still live today.

Gail was predeceased by her parents, Peter J. Rogan and Lina F. Rogan; brothers, Bernard, Peter and Harry Rogan; and sister Ann (Rogan) Leger. She leaves five beloved children, Christopher Garill, Gail (Garill) Montgomery and David Montgomery, John Garill, Janet (Garill) Allen and Christopher Allen, Mark and Melissa Garill. She also leaves seven cherished grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Survivors include her beloved siblings, Major James Rogan (U.S. Army retired); P. Joseph Rogan; and Sister Mary Stather.

A funeral Mass will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 24, 2022, at Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church on Fishers Island, NY. Her ashes will be interned at St. Johns Cemetery. A reception to celebrate her will be held at American Legion Post 1045 following. In honor of her wishes, in lieu of flowers, please make donations in her memory to the Fishers Island Public Library.
