Gary Saunders Obituary

Waterford - Gary W. Saunders, 63, of Waterford, beloved son, husband, father, uncle, and friend, died unexpectedly at Lawrence & Memorial Hospital on Thursday, Jan. 27, 2011.

Born April 29, 1947, to Rita (Schacht) and Colonel Bo Saunders in Brooklyn, N.Y., Gary moved to Waterford where his family operated Waterford Country School, a private school and summer camp for special needs children. He graduated Waterford High School in 1965.

Gary is survived by his wife of 36 years, Dolores "Lorri" and their daughter, Casey.

Amazed as a very young child while watching a plane appear as if out of nowhere to land in the fog, Gary found his passion in aviation. He would have a successful career doing just what he loved - flying planes, selling planes, teaching flying, and being around all things aeronautic.

He received his associate's degree in aerospace pilot technology at Manatee Jr. College in Bradenton, Fla., and went on to earn a bachelor of arts degree in environmental science from Nathaniel Hawthorne College in Antrim, N.H. While in college, Gary worked in the aviation department at Nathaniel Hawthorne College as a flight and ground instructor. Upon graduation, he was offered a position as a flight instructor at New Haven Airways. While there he developed a night ground school, which he grew into a four-year aviation degree program at the University of New Haven. He also began to sell airplanes under the tutelage of his mentor, Dick Giusto.

In 1976, Gary founded Coastal Air Services at the Groton New London Airport. Coastal grew from a single location FBO to a five-location regional charter operator, FBO, and aircraft sales business. During this time Gary became affectionately known throughout the aviation industry as "Mr. Six" because of his affinity for Piper PA 32 Cherokee Six aircraft. As an airline transport pilot (ATP) and flight instructor he logged over 8,500 flight hours. In 1993, he sold Coastal Air Services and went to work at Columbia Aircraft Sales. During his 13 years there, Columbia became one of the foremost Piper distributorships in the world.

After this tenure he ventured out on his own again to open Saunders Aircraft Sales, LLC, located in the Lanmar Aviation FBO facility at Groton. In mid-2007, his long time friend and associate, Gordon Ramsay, joined him. Gary was a member of The Quiet Birdmen, a pilots club founded in 1921.

Gary was larger than life with a heart and passions to match. In addition to his love for aviation, he was devoted to the Waterford Country School and the family's legacy as its founders. For more than a decade, he served on the school's board of trustees on both the finance and development committees, as well as chairperson of the nominating committee. During that time he was instrumental in raising the profile of the school, and growing the organization's annual signature fundraiser Kabaret for Kids. Gary truly embraced the school's philosophy that "Everybody is Somebody."

An avid golfer, Gary could be found enjoying the links at Elmridge Golf Club when he wasn't enjoying the salt air on his family's powerboat or restoring antique automobiles. His zest for life spilled over into a generous spirit. Gary was a great friend to many; always ready to lend a hand, a power tool, or his varied expertise. He made time for those he cared about without a second thought. The brightest light in Gary's life was their daughter, Casey, of whom he was so very proud. He was especially proud of her acceptance and attendance at Marist College.

But as much as Gary loved his planes and his hobbies, his undeniable and extraordinary passion was for the love of his life and wife of 36 years, Lorri, who he met while in college in Florida. In his all-to-short life, Gary, together with Lorri by his side, packed many lifetimes of events and memories filled with a cornucopia of friends and family. They graciously created wonderful memories for many.

In addition to his wife, Lorri and daughter, Casey, Gary is survived by his brother, Bruce Saunders and his wife, Kathy, of Bangor, Maine; mother- and father-in-law, Elizabeth and George Brown of Florida, who he loved dearly; brother-in-law, Douglas Brown and his wife, Janice, of Georgia, brother-in-law, Steven Brown and his wife, Dory, of Georgia; aunt and uncle, Emily and Herbert Schacht of Waterford; five nephews, two nieces, and several cousins.

He was predeceased by his parents.

The family will receive friends and relatives from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday, Jan. 31, 2011, at Impellitteri-Malia Funeral Home, 84 Montauk Ave., New London.

A celebration of Gary's life will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 1, 2011, at the Port & Starboard at Ocean Beach Park, New London.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Waterford Country School, 78 Hunts Brook Road, PO Box 408, Quaker Hill CT 06375, http://www.waterfordcountryschool.org/

I really liked Gary and his family. I remember having a long discussion where he related fascinating history about the Waterford Country School and his family's direct ties to that wonderful program. I was amazed beyond belief that I was in the presence of a man with such a direct link to such a significant mission right here in Waterford. He was always very friendly and had a warm charisma that immediately earned the friendship, trust, and respect of anyone who had the good fortune to meet him.

Dear Cousins Lorrie and Casey,

I am so sorry for the loss of your loving Gary! What a man he was, and still is in your hearts. Though we never became as close as I would have liked, I know that we could easily have become best friends over these years. I very much remember him helping me try to find a corporate flying job when National Airlines went out of business. He called around and we talked many times about many things, including helping me. We also shared that passion for aviation that some have shared in this forum. I wish that I could have found a job in the Northeast, so we could have been closer.

I also remember the lobster dinner, talking by the fire pit at night, watching Gary work on his latest antique vehicle and the wonderful hospitality that your family gave to us when we vacationed in the East in 2004. What a wonderful memory! God bless each of you during these trying times.

Love,
David, Vicki and Lyle Bartz

Lorri & Casey: I recently had the pleasure of meeting Gary, somewhat interesting as our paths had crossed so many times over the last 30 years. I admired his photo of Casey on the Airplane Tilt a Whirl in his office and he pulled out recent photos of both of you. He was so proud of you and it was obvious that he loved you very much. May the knowledge of that love and pride remain with you both and may you draw on it for comfort and strength in the days, months and years ahead.

Lorri & Casey So sorry for your loss..Our thoughts & prayers go out to you at this difficult time..A day with Gary... flying, playing golf or just solving the world's problems was fun & full of laughter. He will be missed & not forgotten.

There are people that you meet and are acquainted with for the shortest amount of time before you think, 'I love this guy!' and when you bump into someone else who knows them, you both say 'I love that guy!' That guy was Gary.

I'm so glad I had a chance to reconnect with him at this years Kabaret for Kids, and introduce him to my husband. Even though my husband had only just met Gary the one time, when I told him of Gary's passing he said 'Aww. I loved that Guy.'

I'm so sorry for your loss, Lorri & Casey, and for all our loss as well. Gary will be truly, truly missed.

Lorri and Casey,

I worked for Gary in 1979 – 1980 on the fuel line at Coastal Air. I remember his fairness and generosity. He was discerning and very professional. He filled a room with his presence. He packed several lifetimes into his all-too-short stay here on Earth. He followed and pursued his passions - a good lesson for all of us.
I am sorry for your loss.

Lorri and Casey, Gary introduced me to the two greatest loves in my life...flying and my husband. One of the most special days of my life was when he married us at Little Palm Island, with you two there as our sole witnesses. He helped change the course of my life for the better, and I will always smile thinking of our flights together. He always had wings, he's just flying higher, now.

Dear Lorri and Casey... I bought my first airplane from Gary, a Cessna 172 [N4253Q]that had a nearly run out engine and was part of his flight school fleet. I will never forget that two weeks after the purchase the wing tank started leaking. When I asked him what I should do he said, "Nothing...I will take care of it" with a Gary smile. And he did. He was the epitome of character and a totally trustworthy person. What a man. I will surely miss his smiling face.

You are both in my prayers!

To the Saunders Family,

I first met Gary a few years back when I was purchasing a new airplane. He was up front with me and gave honest and candid advice with the ultimate suggestion that another plane I had found from a private owner was a "heck of a deal" and to buy it, or else he would! Then I made his acquaintance once again when i had the honor of joining the Groton Quiet Birdmen in which he served as an officer. He was, and will remain, a leader among men and a testament to a life well lived. I regret not having had time to become a close friend and envious of the hundreds of others who did earn that privilege. My sincere condolences at this most difficult time.

The loss of my friend Gary is so painful and upsetting. I remember him in so many ways and with warmth in my heart. He was my first flight px as a new ame. He had such a zeal for life. As short a life as it was Gary lived many lifetimes and shared many memories with so many folks. We send Our prayers for the family and loved ones.

Lorri and Casey, my deepest sympathy to you both.
I had the honor of knowing Gary as his dental hygienist which of course , when you know Gary, means his friend. Gary's smile and laugh were contagious. Our visits always encompassed his pride and love of you. His encouragement for me to have my family is the best advice I ever recieved. He truly was a beautiful man. I will miss him dearly. My love and deepest sympathy , Dorothy
