Gloria Richards Obituary

Mystic - Gloria Mariani Richards, 94, passed away peacefully May 24, 2022, at Stoneridge in Mystic. Gloria was born in New London Oct. 26, 1927, the daughter of Joseph and Caroline (DeBiasi) Mariani. Gloria was predeceased by her husband, George "Hap"; her sisters, Marietta and Eleanor; and her brothers, Roland and Alfred.

She grew up in New London, graduated from the former Williams Memorial Institute (WMI) high school as Salutatorian in 1945. She graduated from Connecticut College for Woman in 1949 with a degree in Zoology.

Gloria married George "Hap" Richards in New London June 21, 1958. They lived in Ridgewood Park in Waterford where they raised their two sons, Dan and Paul. After focusing on raising her family, she worked for many years managing a local doctor's office.

Gloria loved spending time with family and friends where there was always plenty of food, joy, music, and laughter. She was very proud of her Italian heritage always declaring that anything from Italy was naturally better.

She spoke fondly of her summers with family and friends at her grandparent's house in Noank. As Gloria's College yearbook noted: ". . . Hails from New London but claims Noank . . ."

Gloria's favorite times involved eating, cooking, music, sailing, golf, dancing, reading, watching UConn basketball, playing bridge, enjoying the beach, traveling, and spending time with her family. She had a deep knowledge and fond appreciation of nature. She set a City of New London Bowling record in 1955 that held for many years. Gloria will always be loved and remembered for her smile, intelligence, laugh, and fun-loving personality.

Gloria is survived by her son Dan and his wife Deb; her son Paul and his wife Heather; and grandchildren, Steven (Lauren), Michael, Joseph, Carley, Gina Maria, and Gabriela.

Sincere and heartfelt thanks from Gloria's family to the staff at Avalon and The Cottage, and to the invaluable folks at Seniors Helping Seniors in Mystic.

In lieu of flowers, donations to Seniors Helping Seniors, PO Box 382, Mystic, CT 06355-0382 would be greatly appreciated.

A Celebration of Gloria's Life will be held at a later time.
