Irene Anuszewicz Obituary

Norwich - Irene Anuszewicz, 93, of Norwich, loving wife of the late Peter Anuszewicz, died peacefully with her family by her side on Thursday, Jan. 17, 2019. Born in Norwich on Nov. 22, 1925, she was the beloved daughter of the late Ernest Anuszewicz and Caroline Bazinet.

Irene was a caring and gentle soul who brought smiles to all who knew her. For over 30 years, she served the Norwich Board of Education as a Cafeteria Manager at the William A. Buckingham School and the John B. Stanton Elementary School. Irene performed her duties with kindness and compassion, often extending a meal to children who couldn't always afford a hot lunch.

As an avid bowler, Irene was a member of numerous clubs and leagues, including Lord's Duckpin in Waterford, senior member of the Norwich Ten-Pin League, and member of the Thursday Senior Bowling League of Norwich. She was also a fan of the New England Patriots and Boston Red Sox, and loved anything to do with animals. Most of all, she greatly enjoyed spending time with her family, especially her great-grandchildren. Irene will always be remembered as a loving mother, caring grandmother, and cherished great-grandmother who was dearly loved and appreciated by her friends and family.

Irene is survived by her two sons, Joseph and his wife, Irene Deros-Anuszewicz, and Walter Anuszewicz; grandson, Peter Anuszewicz-Deros and his wife, Anastasia; great-granddaughters, Georgina and Deniella; great-nephew, Christopher; and nieces and nephews, Ken Vendola, Terri Duerr, Sandra Vendola, Darlene Therrien, and Jamie Vendola. In addition to her husband, Peter, she was predeceased by her sister, Doris Vendola.

Irene's family will receive friends from 10 to 11 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 19, 2019, at the Woyasz & Son Funeral Service, 141 Central Ave., Norwich. Following the calling hour, a prayer service will be held at 11 a.m. at the funeral home. Burial will follow at St. Joseph Cemetery, 815 Boswell Ave., Norwich. Donations in Irene's memory may be made to the Goodfriends Veterinary Clinic and sent to Waterford-East Lyme Animal Control, 41 Avery Lane, Waterford, CT 06385. Please make checks payable to Goodfriends Veterinary Clinic and also provide "Waterford-East Lyme Animal Control" in the memo line of your donation. Irene's family would also like to extend their gratitude and appreciation for all the care and compassion demonstrated by the nurses of 5/2 and the ICU at Lawrence & Memorial Hospital.

Myself and my family were blessed to have been neighbors and friends with Irene for over 30 years. She always loved to visit with my children or "kabitz" with me. Always so proud to speak of her children and family. We shared many laughs and tears throughout. Irene, I'm sure you are back.together with Pete now, and feeling whole again as I know you missed him terribly.
Much love to all for your loss.
