He was born July 2, 1930, in Boston, Mass., the son of the late Ivan and Elinor (Stearns) Martin. He was the husband of the late Patricia (McCrane) Martin for over 50 years, until her passing Sept. 23, 2010.

He is survived by his son, Scott Martin of Middletown; his daughter, Ellie Hynds of Norwich; five grandchildren, Jennifer (Arthur) Muench, Joseph Hynds, Jake (Caitlin Kennedy) Hynds, Jeffrey Hynds, and Jessica Hynds; and two great-grandchildren, Madeline and Thor Muench. Ivan also leaves his brother, Stearns Martin; and his cousin, Howard Martin.

After graduating from Boston University in 1952, Ivan served for five years in the United States Marine Corps. Ivan and Patricia were married at St. Andrews Church in Marblehead, Mass. Dec. 28, 1957.

Ivan was an active member of the community and was the co-owner of Reid and Hughes, a family business since 1937. For over 50 years, he was a member of the Norwich Rotary Club, receiving the Paul Harris Award. He served on the Advisory Board of NFA in the 1970s and 1980s. Ivan was a Director of the Chelsea Bank since 1961. He also served many years on the Eastern Connecticut and Indian Trails Councils of The Boy Scouts of America, receiving the Silver Beaver Award. I met Ivan after his wife passed away, he joined our widow & widowers group. He was such a nice person and fun to spend time with. Later we kept touch on Facebook. I'm sure his family will miss him terribly. My thought and prayers are with the family as they try to adjust to his loss.

I served in the Norwich Rotary Club with Ivan for twenty years. He was one of the kindest, most thoughtful men I have ever known. He was always a source of encouragement to many of the younger people in the club. I will always remember his smile and warm greeting whenever we met. God bless him. My heart goes out to his family
