Joaquin Dorantes Obituary

Old Lyme - Dr. Joaquin Dorantes, 88, of Saunders Hollow Road, retired pathologist of the Lawrence + Memorial Hospital for over 35 years, died on Monday, March 4, 2013, at the Lawrence + Memorial Hospital, New London.

He was born Jan. 8, 1925, in Aguascalientes, Mexico, the son of the late Jose and Gertrudis (Galvan) Dorantes. Dr. Dorantes received his medical degree from La Universidad Autonoma Nacional de Mexico, and moved to the United States in 1955 to continue his medical training in Brooklyn, N.Y. and subsequently Bridgeport. He started working at L+M in 1961 and retired in 1996. He married the former Judith Johnson in New London on Aug. 25, 1972. He was a member of the Christ Lutheran Church, Niantic.

Besides his wife Judith, he is survived by seven children, Laura Dipollina and her husband, John, of Waterford, Kenneth Dorantes and his wife, Louise, of Wilbraham, Mass., Denise DeSalvo of Quaker Hill, Jeffrey Dorantes of Norwich, Jennifer Dorantes of Wilbraham, Mass., Thomas Dorantes and his wife, Sunah, of Indianapolis, Ind., and Christine Dorantes of New York, N.Y.; 12 grandchildren, Whitney, Matthew, Christopher, Danielle, Kenneth, Melanie, Alyssa, Robyn, Michelle, Michael, Amanda and Benjamin; three great-grandchildren; one brother, Luis Dorantes of Mexico City, Mexico.

Funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. today, at the Christ Lutheran Church, 24 Society Road, Niantic. Interment will be in Bethlehem Cemetery, St. Louis, Mo. The family will receive relatives and friends from 10 to 11 a.m. today, at the church.

Thomas L. Neilan & Sons East Lyme Funeral Home, 48 Grand St., Niantic, is in charge of arrangements.

I will always remember Dr.Dorantes as a true gentlemen. He was never too busy for a sincere smile and kind words. It was a privilege to have known and worked for Dr. Dorantes at L&M Hematolgy laboratory. May he rest in peace for eternity. Deepest condolences to his family and may they know he was highly respected by all.
