John Chaplin Obituary

Quaker Hill - John "Jack" Howard Chaplin III, 62, of Quaker Hill, passed away peacefully May 11, 2021, surrounded by those that he loved most. Jack was born in Manchester, July 8, 1958, to John Howard Chaplin II and Jean Staring Chaplin. As the only boy with four older sisters, Jack was fondly referred to as "Baby Jesus," a nickname that quickly stuck.

From an early age, Jack had an unparalleled work ethic. Starting at age 14, he began working 60 hours a week in restaurants, while going to school. In 1978, Jack graduated from Johnson & Wales University, and the world became his oyster (ironically, one of the only foods that he was allergic to). From Denver to San Francisco, to Fort Lauderdale to Atlanta, Jack traveled the country, apprenticing with some of the greatest chefs and restaurateurs. In 1983, Jack landed in Dallas, Texas, which became his home for the better part of 20 years. In 1988, Jack and Marna welcomed their first daughter, Rachel, soon followed by Luci in 1991. Their daughters were their pride and joy; in Jack's opinion, his greatest accomplishment. In 1992, Jack opened his first Daddy Jack's Restaurant on Greenville Avenue, which was followed by the opening of 20 restaurants and three bars throughout his career, ultimately taking him to New London, in 2009. Jack was the embodiment of a restaurateur and chef; this was evident by his daily "uniform" of Chefwear pants. A Carhartt pocket T-shirt, Snap-on socks, and a Carhartt limited-edition Patriots hat completed Jack's signature look.

Jack always believed that music, like cooking, was a labor of love. Although he loved all music, he had a special affinity for blues music and could frequently be seen playing auxiliary percussion, often in the form of a cheese grater, with the bands that performed at Daddy Jack's. Jack even established his own record label, Jack Daddy Records, and recorded eight blues albums. In 2008, Jack blended his love of cooking and music and began his first YouTube channel, Chaplin's Classic. A few years later, he created Cooking with the Blues. With more than 250,000 subscribers, Jack has reached millions of people, worldwide, who shared a love for his videos and recipes. Jack referred to his viewers as his "YouTube family," and truly enjoyed each and every person who took the time to comment on his videos, call the restaurant to chat, send letters, and oftentimes, take trips from across the world to visit him in New London.

As magnetic and larger-than-life as Jack was, he also had a much quieter side. He was delighted by the simple things in life. He loved to watch the birds and soak up the sunshine with his partner Lakisha on their back deck, complete his daily crossword puzzle, listen to NPR, watch Jeopardy, and go for drives, often with the intention of dropping off special care packages to his daughters, fondly referred to as his "baby girls." Jack especially loved to play cards, specifically Setback. Family gatherings, with everyone around the card table, were the highlight of Jack's life - unless of course he got partnered with his sister, Holly, who is infamous for being a "reckless bidder." Jack also had a penchant for "gently used" vehicles - if it had less than 150,000 miles on it, he wasn't interested. He could always be seen driving around New London by car or motorcycle, with a smile on his face and a wave at the ready. Jack was a pillar of the New London community and was known to go above and beyond. Whether it was for late-night talks at the "family table" at Daddy Jack's or a donation to every local event whose flyer came across his stove, Jack had the biggest heart. To know Jack was to love Jack, and we will forever cherish his memory and the impact that he has made on all of our lives.

Those that knew Jack knew he was an avid reader, a blues enthusiast and a generous supporter of his community. In Jack's honor, his family has established the Daddy Jack Chaplin Foundation. They plan to create a yearly scholarship for a student in the culinary program at New London High School and make yearly donations in his honor to support the New London community and the Waterford Public Library, which Jack frequented often. Donations to the Daddy Jack Chaplin Foundation can be made at paypal.me/DaddyJackFoundation. Please visit www.fultontherouxnewllondon.com to sign the online guestbook and to leave a tribute for Jack's family.

Left in sorrow to mourn the passing of Jack are his beloved Lakisha, and son Titus; treasured daughters, Rachel and Luci and their significant others, Justin and Wes (daughter, Reese); and their mother Marna; sisters, Star, Pam, Holly and Heidi; nieces and nephews that he loved as his own: David, Jillian, Carrie, Aaron, Mia, Matthew, Madalyn, Joshua, Sara and Harley; and his four-legged best friend, Axel. Jack was welcomed with loving arms into Heaven by his parents, Jack and Jean; his brother-in-law Kevin; and favorite aunts, uncles and friends.

A private service will be held for immediate family. The Chaplin Family would like to invite you to attend a Celebration of Life in Jack's honor at noon Sunday, July 11, at the Groton Elks Lodge & Marina. When you are missing Jack the most, close your eyes, turn your face to the sun, bask in its warmth and feel Jack's warm embrace surround you - forever in our hearts.

My wife and I are stunned and saddened to stumble on the news of Jack Chaplin´s untimely death. We had the very great privilege of coming to know Jack and Marna, and later Rachel and Luci, in Dallas in the late 1980s. From their Grinders restaurant with the best sandwiches in the world to Daddy Jack´s on lower Greenville and his mouthwatering lobster bisque, Jack was an unforgettable, gregarious and gracious host and a magnificent chef. We still have never found a lobster bisque that could touch his fabulous concoction. On more than one occasion Jack very generously prepared several huge soup pots of it for us to serve at small gatherings in our home. We treasure the times we shared with Jack, Marna and the girls, and though our times together were a relatively few short years the impact of their goodness in our lives has lived on all these decades later. Our heartfelt love and condolences go out to Marna, Rachel, Luci, and the rest of his family who we never knew. What an incredible life he created and legacy he has left.

My wife and I met Jack at his Chapman's restaurant on Greenville Avenue in Dallas. He was such a friendly host, and made you feel at home in his restaurant. To this day, I count those as some of the best meals I ever had. My condolences to his family: he was a good man.

I miss Jack. I gave him a hard time because on video all his food looked beige regardless of the magnificent colors of his creations. We knew each other a long time as I was in the restaurant business, too. The tributes to Jack here are fitting. The world is short one great guy.

I had the pleasure of dining at Daddy Jacks a few times while visiting family in Westerly RI and Niantic CT. The first time I went I learned from the bartender that Jack had once owned a restaurant in the Dallas area. I was invited into the kitchen to meet the maestro and learned that we had a friend in common who still Iives in Dallas. Daddy Jack was very kind and he had a laugh that filled the whole kitchen. He could cook with the best of them. I just learned today of his passing from my friend in Dallas. RIP chef.

I'm Jack's age and started learning to cook late in life, i discovered Cooking with the Blues on YouTube and knew I struck gold immediately. I would do what the vampires did in that movie (my daughter just yelled Twilight) by watching what Jack did on the screen and pausing it, run to my kitchen do the same and then run back and press play and so on until I was finished. I learned a lot from Jack and he was such a good guy. I wish i had made the trip down to CT and met him but i'll meet him on the other side. His videos will live on forever.

I am just one of his grateful 250 thousand YouTube followers... I first saw Jack on a video and was amazed at how high his gas stove burners were... That pulled me in... also both of us being from CT. was an attraction. I learned so much from his simple, down to earth methods... We lost a good soul, bluesman and friend I never met this side of heaven. You can bet I'll be looking for him when its my turn to cross that river... Thanks for everything Jack Chaplin III !

I met Jack by chance in Dallas, in 1991. I was more or less "passing through" and renting a place on lower Greenville. I stopped in Chaplins, his first restaurant in Dallas, one night while bar hopping. We got to chatting and Jack found out that I was a chef, and was looking for a little work. His sous chef had just gone in the hospital for a 2+ month stint and Jack hired me on the spot to fill in. What a great guy and first class friend. We had great times cooking together and cruising around in his vintage Caddy. Jack is missed by many of us who got to share time with him.

Jack. what a great guy you were, as I´ve known you since we used to commute back and forth to Johnson and Wales back in "76-78. When I just saw the news of your passing today, I was devastated, as you were taken from this earth way too early. We had some good times in Culinary School and it seems as though you made a big difference in the profession, as Utube is proof of that. To me, you became a Celebrity Chef, showing viewers from an actual restaurant kitchen, how to create, present, pair food with wines, and love family and friends, all through food and music. Brilliant!!!! What an education your viewers received! I miss your one of a kind laugh and we had many through college, and kick myself in the butt for not staying in touch with you. From one Chef to another Jack, your legacy will live on forever as a Professional Culinary Wizard with soooooooooo much knowledge of the restaurant business and the Love for Family and Music. My condolences as belated as they are, go out to your family and may you Rest In Peace, Jack Chaplin III

I discovered Jack last year during the pandemic on YouTube and was absolutely addicted to his cooking videos. There was something special about his no nonsense cooking techniques and just how amazing his dishes looked. I learned after a few videos of how much of a big heart and soul Jack had. I wish I could have met Jack and dined at his restaurant. But I've watched hundreds of his videos and some how feel that I have every time I watch him. I can't believe how incredibly sad I felt when I saw his latest video was 4 months ago and then found out from the comments that he had passed. Thanks for teaching me a lot of recipes chef and thanks for making me a better person through you. I hope they have plenty of green onions up there for you.

Jack was a special man. He made a big impression on me. His 5 minute chili and his spaghetti sauce are now staples in my recipe book. I have two favorite chefs; Jaques Pepin and Jack Chaplin. I would say he is in pretty good company. I was born in Groton CT and like many, planned to go to his restaurant if I ever was in the area. I wish I would have made it. Love to his family.

My sincere condolences to all the Chaplins. I only recently found Jack on YouTube and have been obsessed watching every show he made. He was truly a unique great chef and even greater man. You can feel Jack's love, passion and big heart right through the TV screen. What a tremendous loss to Lakisha, his family and friends to be taken away so young. His cooking contributions and good deeds to others less fortunate will never die.
What a truly magnificent man who shared his life and cooking skills with everyone. He will be sadly missed by all he touched. RIP and thank you Jack Chaplin. Heaven will surely welcome you with open arms and be playing the blues in remembrance of you life's journey.

With heartfelt sympathy,

OMG, Lakisha and Lucy, and the rest of your families. Your father touched so many lives. His restaurant was on my bucket list, and has left a huge void as I never got to New London from Texas. He was such a warm, caring person, Rest In Peace. Truly a day of mourning having learned this. My prayers are with you all.

While I never actually met Jack, we connected over YouTube and his many cooking videos. I am truly heartbroken to learn of this, and my thoughts and prayers go out to Luci, Lakisha and Titus, you father and dad touched so many lives through his cooking. I am devastated to learn of his passing, and my prayers are with you and your families. I was a year year older than your dad, and connected with him through music and his cooking. So sorry to hear this, and my thoughts and prayers are with you. Rest In Peace and Godspeed Jack, you touched so many people´s lives.

Jack was my favorite YouTube chef. He put his heart and soul into every dish he mastered. A wonderful human being and a great chef. A lot of hearts are sorrowful now, but we all know that he is no longer in discomfort. Rest in Peace, "Daddy" Jack.

Never got the opportunity to meet Jack, but conversed with him on YouTube, specifically about his Gravies. What a genius with how he could just off the top of his head create recipes.

Although he seemed to be a great Chef, I noticed he was an even better person. Always positive and had good things to say about everybody. He will be greatly missed, condolences to the family.
