John Spillane Obituary

Mystic - John Arthur Spillane, born Dec. 27, 1953, in Glen Falls, N.Y., passed away peacefully Dec. 20, 2024, at Lawrence + Memorial Hospital in New London, surrounded by family. John spent his childhood in Mystic, with his parents, Neil and Dorothy, and his siblings, James "Jamie" and Nancy Spillane.

A graduate of Ledyard High School's VoAg program, John excelled in horticulture, earning numerous local and national awards for his remarkable talents. His passion for plants led him to Longwood Gardens in Pennsylvania, where he further developed his skills and met his first wife, Debbie. They had two children, John J. Spillane of Griswold, and Melissa Kumeiga of Manchester. A gifted gardener and landscape designer, John was once offered an esteemed position at Kew Gardens in London. However, he chose to remain in the U.S. to prioritize his family and pursue a long career as a sheet metal fabricator at E.B.

John's love for nature extended beyond his professional life. He found joy in fishing, gardening, and cooking. Animals were naturally drawn to him - a reflection of his kind and gentle spirit.

In 2018, John married Melody Woodin, a longtime friend who brought immense happiness to his life. Melody has two children, Paul and Eric Woodin of Groton. John is survived by his father, Neil Spillane of Mystic; his beloved wife, Melody Spillane of Groton; siblings, Nancy and Jamie Spillane; children John J. Spillane (Barbara) and Melissa Kumeiga (Craig); grandchildren, Nikki and Logan; as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends who will deeply miss his warm smile.
