Joyce Grayson Obituary
Born Joyce Elaine Jordan June 29, 1960, to Robert and Edna Jordan, she grew up as one of thirteen children on a dairy farm in Sterling. A graduate of Killingly High School, Joyce went on to attend nursing school at Windham Tech., graduating as a licensed practical nurse. During her 26-year career with the State of Connecticut Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services (DMHAS), Joyce worked at the Norwich State Hospital, the Capital Region Mental Health Center and the Southeastern Mental Health Authority. After retiring from DMHAS, she continued to serve as a visiting nurse for New England Home Care, now known as Elara Caring, for over 10 years, until the date of her untimely death.
Joyce loved to cook and bake, often contributing to local bake sales or catering a family gathering. Joyce was well known for helping her community, often volunteering wherever she was needed, at whatever event. She enjoyed spending summers camping and going to the beach and often took short trips to Florida with family and friends in the winter. Seldom did a day pass where she wasn't in the company of her children, grandchildren or siblings. Her glowing demeanor and infectious smile warmed those around her. Joyce also served her community as a foster parent for the Department of Children and Families for over 20 years. She treated her foster children as her own, even when they were with her for a short period of time. She always made each and every child part of her family.
Joyce was a beautiful soul, who dedicated her life to caring for others. She loved her job as a mental health nurse, and it was truly what she was put on this earth to do. She passed away doing what she loved. She leaves behind a large family, whom she raised with her large heart to be just like her.
Calling hours will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday, Nov. 3, at Tillinghast Funeral Home, 433 Main Street, Danielson. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 4, at the Federated Church of Christ, 15 Hartford Road, Brooklyn, immediately followed by a reception at the Brooklyn Fairgrounds, 5 Fairgrounds Road, Brooklyn. As a home hospice nurse I will strive to continue Joyces´ legacy in our field. I didn´t know her personally but it seems the love she had for this profession was unmatched. I did not know Joyce personally but every nurse feels her death deeply. Ron and family, I was shocked and deeply saddened when I heard about Joyce's tragic passing. So many fond memories of what an amazing, thoughtful, compassionate, and inspiring person she was, dating all the way back to our Norwich Hospital days.
