Laurie Matylewicz Obituary

Griswold - Another angel went to heaven, Laurie L. (Wahl) Matylewicz, BSN, RN, passed away unexpected Friday, Dec. 10, 2021, at the age of 65, after a lengthy illness.

She studied at Three Rivers Community College, furthering her education at University of Rhode Island, School of Nursing, where she received her Bachelor of Science in Nursing. Laurie was destined to be a nurse. She started working at Backus Hospital, within the Emergency Room Department Dec. 18, 1981, and then transferred to the Plainfield Backus Emergency Care Center. After devoting 40 years of service, she retired in October 2021. Laurie had many passions during her lifetime, but she was everything a nurse should be and if you came into her emergency room, you never felt alone. No matter what brought you there, while you were under her watch you had a hand to hold, a nonjudgmental ear, an advocate, and if nothing else, you had warm feet.

Laurie was humble and modest about her nursing, her family, and especially the people she loved. Laurie beamed when speaking of her siblings and her love for the great outdoors in New York. Laurie was a teacher, a mentor, a Nightingale, and a friend to all. She loved to read, to journal, travel and gardening. Anyone that knew her would find her outside in one of her many gardens or visiting the many flower shops in the area. People would be amazed at what she carried in the trunk of her car and she was always prepared to increase her flower gardens. Laurie had a powerful love for animals especially for her own. She always admired a beautiful sunrise and after a long third shift she would often call her colleagues outside to admire the canvas that God had painted. She believed sunrises were precious and a reminder to all to slow down and remember that every day is a gift from God.

Laurie will be sadly missed by the surviving members of her family, her husband, Robert Matylewicz; Sami Furr (mother); James Furr (stepfather); several siblings, Sandy Furr, Lisa Willis, Linda Pawlowski, David Furr, Teddy Furr, Wendy Furr, James Furr III, and Jaime Furr. Along with numerous nieces, nephews, god-children, cousins, aunts, uncles, friends, distinguished colleagues and especially her pets Bella, Kemo and Spooky.

Laurie was predeceased by Walter Wahl (father); Walter Wahl Jr., Charles Wahl (brothers); and grand-parents, Ted and Laura Burnham and Claude and Elizabeth Wahl.

Please join us celebrating her life at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 8, 2022, at St. Mary's Church, 34 North Main Street Jewett City. Immediately following the service please join us for light refreshments in the Church's family center.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to her favorite charity Tunnel for Towers Foundation or to a charity of your choice.

Aunt Laurie was always a cheerful and giving person. She was always there for her family and friends no matter the cost to herself. She always had her unique style whether it was the movies she enjoyed to her decor. It was an extension of her personality. This made every visit warm and welcoming, like a second home. I'm truly thankful to have all the amazing memories of her while I was growing up. From our visits to Connecticut, up at camp, or later at Lake Francis. When I remember her it's all warm, loving, happy memories. She truly was an Angel amongst us.

Sweet, kind, dear Angel Laurie.... You were an angel here on earth. Your work - or "shift" here on earth is now complete. You are free to spread your angel wing to fly stress-free and without struggle and pain. Dance, sing and play amongst the flowers with the souls (both human and those with paws) up there in heaven. You are loved, admired and will never be forgotten.

Laurie, I miss you, my friend. I will never forget meeting you at Notre Dame. You were going through a rough time, and we spent many of our free periods sitting quietly in the Chapel, reflecting on life and how sometimes it really sucked. We became very close and then, they closed Notre Dame. We then wound up in separate schools, losing touch, until Sandy ran into me at my job. She invited me to your bridal shower as a surprise guest. "Laurie will be so glad to see you", she said. It was a great reunion. We were so happy. After that we reconnected for about 2 years. You and Bob, Me and Dan, and Sandy. Sandy, my closest and dearest friend for years. We became like sisters, and it was all because of you, Laurie. Thank you. Unfortunately, as life often does, we again separated when I moved to Texas in 1975 and then settled in West Haven in 1979. Once in a while, on my visits to Norwich, if you and Bob were free, we would get together, but then again, in 1986, I moved out of state and again we lost touch. My only regret is that I wasn't able to come see you one last time, to hug you and let you know how much you were loved, thought of, and missed. I was in town but was told that you were not up for visitors. I will always cherish the memories we made together, and I will always hold a special place in my heart for you, my dear friend. You are so loved and will be missed. BFF...Sue

my condolences to Laurie's family. i worked with her in the ER for many years. She was always so kind to her patients and their families. She worked her way up the ER ladder to become charge on her shift . I admired her perserverance in her goals to become a nurse. Laurie brought calm to a busy emergency room. You will be missed.
