Louise Sheflott Obituary

New London - Louise M. Sheflott, 90, formerly of Boston Post Road, Waterford and most recently of New London, died suddenly Wednesday, Nov. 23, 2011, at Lawrence & Memorial Hospital, New London.

Mrs. Sheflott was born on March 9, 1921 in New London, the daughter of Dorothy (McCue) Miller and William Miller. She married Leonard J. Sheflott in New London at St. Joseph's Church, Sept. 22, 1945, he predeceased her on April 13, 1995.

Louise graduated from Williams Memorial Institute in 1940 and the New London Business School. She worked at the New London Savings Bank and then joined the Women's Army Corps in 1942. She worked in recruiting in Bangor, Maine, then at Fort Banks, Winthrop, Mass. and the Waltham Regional Hospital, Massachusetts as a medical technician. She was awarded the American Theater Campaign Ribbon, Good Conduct Medal and the World War II Victory Medal and was honorably discharged in 1945 with the rank of sergeant.

Louise had a love of reading, especially non-fiction, poetry and plays, her favorite playwright was Eugene O'Neill. She was an authority on the Kennedy assassination. With her literary background, it was no wonder she was a most engaging storyteller, of her youth, her love of horseback riding, her war experience, history of family and New London. She derived great strength and peace from her Catholic faith. Above all else, she was a most loving mother who dedicated her life to her family. "Nana's" strength of character and warm embrace, we carry with us.

Mrs. Sheflott is survived by her three daughters, Elinor Ryan of New London, Susan and her husband, Donald Waggaman, of Rhode Island, and Patricia and her husband, Karl Walczak ,of Massachusetts; her four grandsons, Michael Waggaman of New York, Connor Waggaman of Rhode Island, Ryan Sheflott of New York and Ross Sheflott of New Jersey; her granddaughter, Dana Walczak and her husband, Douglas Greene of Watham, Mass.; and her daughter-in-law, Gail Sheflott of Avon.

She is predeceased by her son, Leonard J. Sheflott Jr. on June 8, 2003.

The Procession will assemble at 10 a.m. Monday, Nov. 28, 2011, at Fulton-Theroux Funeral Home, 181 Ocean Ave., New London, to proceed to a Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m., in St. Joseph Church, New London. Interment will follow in Jordan Cemetery, Waterford.

Barb Brockhurst and Bob Lavoie (#203) have been Louise's neighbor for 2-3 years. On behalf of both of us, please accept our condolensces. I recall that during a recent elevator malfunction that Louise bravely negotiated the stairs in order to carry on with her daily activies. I'll not soon forget the courage and dignity with which she managed her final years. I also very much admire her daughter Elinor for supporting her without overwhelming. -Barb
