Lucille Curland Obituary

Hebron - Lucille Marie "Lu" (Caisse) Curland of Hebron, and formally Columbia, passed into the next life peacefully in her sleep, surrounded by her family June 4, 2022, at the age of 90. Lu was beloved by all who knew her and a true matriarch in the greater Curland and Caisse family.

The classiest of ladies, Lu raised her immediate family in Columbia, with her knight in shining armor, Dick, who survives her. Together they lovingly created an idyllic family life for their three children, David, Neal and Susan, on what they all affectionately called "October Hill," with both Dick and Lu's birthdays and anniversary coming in the month of October. Lu and Dick had an almost 70-year love affair, having wed in Willimantic Oct. 11, 1952. Lu attended ECSU after graduating from Windham High School, raised her family and worked at Sweeney Elementary School for over 30 years as a para-professional. She loved her students and coworkers, whom she enjoyed socializing with, "The Sweeney Sweeties," well after retiring. Lu enjoyed her trips to Woodstock, Vermont, with Dick, presiding over her family at her niece Tina Knox's home in New Hampshire, on special weekends and for 25 straight summers her family's weekly vacation on Cape Cod. Besides Dick, Lu is survived by her children, David (Chrissie) of Port Orange Fla., Neal (Kelly) of Norwich, and Susan of Madison; also grandchildren: Seth, Matthew, Connor, Christian, Cameron, Caroline and Quynn: as well as many close nieces, nephews and cousins, whom she loved dearly. She is survived by her brother Alexis (Lorraine) Caisse III of Florida. She is predeceased by her parents, Alexis and Camilla Caisse, formerly of Willimantic; her brother Norman; and her son-in-law Matthew Kaempf. She will be greatly missed by her family and friends.

A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, June 25, at Bacon Funeral Home, 71 Prospect Street, Willimantic. Relatives and friends may call from 11 a.m. until the service. To send an online expression of sympathy, please visit www.baconfh.com.

I was fortunate to have been a member of the Curland family during my marriage to David. I have many happy memories of Lucille and time spent at "October Hill". It was a privilege getting to know her. She was gracious and kind, the type of woman that brought out the best in people. She will be truly missed by those who knew and loved her. My heart goes out to Dick, David, Susan, Neal and the rest of the family.
