Luz Valentin

New London - With heavy hearts and so much love, we share the passing of our beloved mother and matriarch, Luz Valentin, lovingly known to many as "Mami," "Mama," "Mama Luz," Tia Luz" or "Lucy", who peacefully went home March 24, 2026, surrounded by her children, at the age of 91.

Luz was a devoted mother to eight children: Anthony Valentin (Nada), Jay Valentin (Sherri), Pablo Valentin (Dolly), Jeanette Villanueva (Joe), Sergio Valentin (Rose), Kevin Valentin, Ivonne Butler (Ken), and Steven Valentin (Beth). She was a proud grandmother to 19 grandchildren and a loving great-grandmother to 26 great-grandchildren, with one great-great-granddaughter on the way. Her love didn't stop there, she also had an extra grandchild by heart whom she cared for from infancy until he started school. He later honored her by naming his eldest daughter after her. Also, she leaves her companion of 28 years, who always took great care of her, especially in her last days, Nelson Cruz. She also leaves behind four sisters; one brother; and several beloved nieces and nephews.

She was reunited with her beloved husband, Julio Valentin, who passed in 1994. Together, Luz and Julito made the brave decision to leave Puerto Rico and come to the United States to give their children a better life. Through hard work, faith, and determination, they not only built a strong foundation for their own family but also helped bring other relatives over, so they could have better opportunities, too.

Luz was a devoted Catholic and a faithful member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, where she attended Spanish Mass every week. Her church community meant so much to her; they were like extended family, and she leaves behind many dear friends who will truly miss her.

Mama Luz was the heart of the family. She was strong, loving, and always giving. Her home was always open, there was always something to eat, and she made sure everyone felt cared for. Nothing made her happier than being surrounded by her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.

She lived a full and beautiful life centered on family, faith, and love. Even though she is no longer with us, her spirit, her strength, and her love will live on in all of us. Her legacy will carry on in each of us! Mama Luz will be deeply missed, always loved, and never forgotten!

Calling hours will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday, March 29, at Impellitteri-Maila Funeral Home, 84 Montauk Ave., New London. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, March 30, in St. Mary Star of the Sea Church, Huntington Street, New London. Burial will follow at St. Mary Cemetery, New London.
