Maren Schober Obituary

Uncasville - Maren (Kiehl) Schober, 82, died at her home Thursday, April 3, 2025. Beloved wife and First Mate of her husband Albert E. Schober Jr., Maren is survived by her children, Robert Laird Schober, his wife Debbie of Uncasville and Benjamin Philip Schober of New Haven; her sister Kristin Brown; her sister-in-law Paula Light; and her granddaughters, Althea Hine and Roxy Schober.

Maren was born in Englewood, N.J., Jan. 12, 1943, to the late Robert and Mary (Spear) Kiehl and grew up in her childhood home, Leonia, N.J. She graduated from Summit High School Summit, N.J. in 1961, and Westminster College, New Wilmington, Pa. in 1965. Maren and Al were married Sept. 4, 1965 at Central Presbyterian Church in Summit, N.J.

Teaching was Maren's chosen career and she loved working with children all her life. Her teaching experience included German at East Paterson, N.J. Jr. High School and after moving to Uncasville in 1969, she taught sixth grade at State Street School in Westerly, R.I., and fifth grade at Fair Oaks School in Montville. After her children were born, Maren worked as a substitute teacher in the local elementary schools.

Having a strong faith in God, Maren was a long-time member of St. David's Episcopal Church in Gales Ferry. She served God through her ministry of prayer and music at St. David's. Maren would never let a day go by without singing, playing the piano or her guitar at home, schools or church.

Maren was First Mate to Captain Al on board their 30' Tartan sailboat, the "Sea Cup," and together they made many sailboat cruises both near and far. A love of writing led Maren to keep detailed accounts of their many sea journeys. Both Maren and Al enjoyed membership at the Thames Yacht Club in New London and their many sailing buddies. Maren also was a reporter for the Resident Newspaper 2007-2013. She was widely known for her Kindergarten column in the Resident. But primarily, Maren deeply loved her family and friends.

A Memorial Service for Maren will be held at a later date. Please visit www.montvillefuneralhome.com for updates.

I'm so sad to hear of Martin's passing. As our kids became friends, so did our families. Over the years we reconnected out in our boats, at dinners at St James Parish, and again at the Senior Center. Such a lovely person touched the lives of many everywhere she ment.
