Maria Fatima Mitchell

Mystic - Maria Fatima Mitchell, 80, of Mystic, passed away Oct. 3, 2025 at the Westerly Hospital after a sudden illness.

Born Sept. 25, 1945, in Sao Miguel, Azores, Maria was the beloved daughter of the late Francisco and Maria Christina (Leite) Amaral.

She made her way to the U.S. building a life filled with love, faith and dedication to her family. She married Louis Mitchell who sadly, predeceased her. Together they raised their children and created a legacy rooted in kindness and warmth.

Maria was predeceased by her two sons, Louis Mitchell Jr. and Paul Mitchell; her brothers, Jose Leite and Mario Amaral; and sisters, Isabel Policarpo, Maxine Barrett and recently, Judith Mitchell. She is survived by a daughter-in-law, Cheryl Mitchell; grandchildren, Katelynn (Joseph) and Christian Mitchell; and a great-granddaughter, Adilaiya Beasley. Maria is also survived by her siblings, Antonio (Teresa) Amaral, George (Thora) Amaral, Paulina Cruz and Iva DaSilva; and many nieces, nephews and great-nieces and great-nephews.

Spending time with her family and close friends is what Maria cherished the most. She will be deeply missed. In addition to being with her family and friends, she enjoyed knitting, going to bingo, playing cards and the slots at the casino and of course, her 3 p.m. coffee time. She was a faithful parishioner of St. Patrick Church in Mystic.

Her family will receive relatives and friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday evening, Oct. 9, at the Mystic Funeral Home located on Route 1 in Mystic. Her funeral services and burial will be held privately.
