Marion O'Neil Obituary

Bozrah - Surrounded by family at the Middlesex Hospital, Marion "Sis" O'Neil, 85, died on June 4, 2018.

She was born Sept. 26, 1932, in Norwich. Sis, daughter of Marion Larson and Witter O'Neil (deceased), is survived by her three siblings, Barbara, Tommy and Skip and their spouses. Older sister Patty was predeceased in 1995.

In addition to many nieces, nephews and cousins, Sis's extended family includes Snuffy, her true companion and the Acorn Acres Camp Mascot. Many camping friends and her incredible loyal staff and devoted families and friends have found their way to her campground. This year, Acorn Acres Campground celebrates its "50th" anniversary, 1968-2018.

Sis attended NFA and was a member of the graduating Class of 1950. Sis loved the academic world and had many interests in school; two favorites were the French Club and Chorus. Sis was a physical education teacher at Notre Dame and Kelly Junior High in Norwich. She was an instrumental part of the NFA Alumni Association, organizing and hosting annual events.

In the early 50's, Sis coached a girl's basketball team called "TheFlashers." Sis was a great lover of sports and games and expressed an enthusiastic sense of fair play and competition. She remained an ever-faithful fan of the UConn Huskies and the Connecticut Sun.

For fifty years, it has been non-stop entertainment with a daily list of activities that Sis would encourage the campers to participate in, especially the kids. But cell phones and electronics eventually took the place of that, as well as hanging out in the rec hall together, playing the juke box and shooting pool.

How she missed the kids and interacting with them, coaching them, listening to their dreams and encouraging them. Just "go for it," Sis would say.

As we echo her own parting words, "SEE- YA," to this incredible woman, Acorn Acres will forever live on in our childhood memories, in the daily laughter and songs among dear friends, and in the love that keeps the campfire of our hearts aglow.

Love ya, SIS. "Oh My!"

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. on Friday, June 8, at Sts. Peter and Paul Church, 181 Elizabeth St., Norwich, with the burial to follow at St. Joseph's Cemetery, 815 Boswell Ave.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to hospice.

August 4, 2018

It is exactly two months to the date of your letting go of this world and walking into the next. Surely Mom & Dad, (Pat & Jack) were there to greet you along with other significant souls. I have finally read all the prayers, poems and memories listed here and laughed out loud to some of them. What a life you made for yourself and all who knew you. For me, dearest Aunt it will be the childhood memories of getting AA started and the absolute trust and freedom you gave us for doing adult chores when we were just pre-teens. What joy! What fun! And somehow, you always knew where we were even if we didn't want to be discovered. Remembering warm evening swims and washing up with dial soup in Gardner Lake, listening to Nat King Cole before bedtime, and posing for a zillion pictures with ALL of your cameras. May God Bless you and your entire campground family. It has been my greatest joy to be your niece and loving friend. Colleen #2

Dearest Miss Sis. I miss you with me. I miss us seeing turkeys...a whole family of them crossing the road. And we would see them together. I miss us talking about the "croakers" and loving that sound. I miss you making this the greatest place to live for me....but I know it was not for me....but for every one who had a reason to stay here, year round. I remember you on a snow mobile at midnight on the back road, and I was walking my puppies in the snow. What a surprise it was. You stopped and said "I see you love the outdoors." I miss hearing you say "see ya" or holding your hands up with thumbs up. I miss those sweat pants and tops. I miss your signature on my bill. I miss you talking about 12 Days of Christmas, and what it meant to you. And you used it year round. I miss us eating at Bozrah Pizza. You, with the spinach pizza or pie, and of course, the beer. Can't eat at Bozrah without beer.
My Dad and I both, have you in our hearts. I love you Miss Sis. Kiss on the forehead and a big hug.....as always. Oh my. See ya!!!!!!

My thoughts and prayers are with the family. I spend over 25 years camping at Acorn Acres in the circle on site 120. Our family went down the day after school got out to Labor Day weekend and through Halloween.

My family grew up there and us seasonal had the best times on the weekends hanging in the rec-hall, movies, dances and trying not to get into teenage trouble.

Sis was a wonderful teacher and friend.

On Friday, I had the honor of being a pall bearer at my Aunt Sis's funeral. It was an honor that I will forever treasure. Psychologists say the formative years are from ages 4-7. Well, being the emotionally mature challenged' person that I am, my formative years began when I first stepped on the hallowed grounds of Acorn Acres Campground as an 8 year old boy with a whiffle haircut. Since then, not one single thing has shaped me more than being in the shadows of both the Oaks and Pines of Connecticut and my Aunt Sis. Sis was the eternal optimist who always saw the best in every person she met, especially kids. Her passion of sports, recreation, and the love of the outdoors, seemed to be magically infused into my bloodstream. There was never a time when she wasn't putting herself into a child's mindset and trying to get them to play a game, participate in an activity, or simply practice at being your best. Just as the trees have grown tall and strong over the last 50 years, Sis has been sturdy and steady with endless energy and enthusiasm for making a kid feel special. I am honored to be just one of many whose life was shaped because of my Aunt Sis. Thank you, Aunt Sis. Who I am today is because of your love. Love, Dave Caruso aka Hippie

"Sis" was not my Mother's biological sister; but, for more than a half-century, she treated and loved my Mom as if she were. Sis had an aura about her that was blindingly brilliant. Her generosity of heart and spirit touched so many--I am blessed to have been one... You truly deserve perpetual rest, Sis... RIP... Sis was my gym teacher many years ago at Kelly Junior high. One day in gym I was misbehaving badly. She had me duck walk around the gymnasium for punishment. It was well deserved and a learning lesson for me. Twenty years later I met her in a restaurant that I worked at. I was very amazed that she had remembered me. I then told her the story and we laughed so much about it. She was the best and will be missed by myself and anyone else who was lucky enough to have known her.

Sis, Thank you for the many ways you touched my, and so many other, lives. Like so many, I literally and figuratively grew up at AA - its where the very best memories of my life and some of my very best friendships to this day began. You gave me my first job, and I still remember receiving care packages of popcorn and chocolate acorns you sent when I was away at college. Youve known me since I was just a child, saw me get married and met my children earlier this year - things just wont be the same without you.

June 7, 2018

Sis thanks for the memories we made at Acorn Acres. It just won't be the same without you . Loved every summer we camped there and all of he wonderful friends we met while there. All I can say now is "see ya" Love John and Sally

June 7, 2018

Dear Sis,
I want to be outside to feel the wind, to hear the birds, to feel the water of the stream catch my sneaker as I try to jump over it. I want to drape a towel around my neck, lead my little campers down to the lake and not be afraid of any snakes along the way. I want to let you know that I am OK with going to church with you on Sundays, even if I have to dress up.
I want to gnaw on frozen snickers' bars, mind the store, and sweep the Rec hall when the juke box is playing Oh, Sweet Pea. I want to answer the phone and say, Acorn Acres campground. How can I help you?
I want to slide down the hill across the frozen pond and end up on the other side without falling in. I want to sit on a fence and caress a large brown cow. I want to shoot a bee bee gun at a can over yonder on the fence and pretend I'm living in the Wild West. I want to day dream about a '57 Chevy from Uncle Bob and how cool would that be to drive around and show off.
I want to smell the clothes that stayed out all night on the line because they needed the night air. I want to hold Springer Spaniel puppies and feel their silken ears against my rough hands. I want to plant Christmas tree seedlings and then sell them when they've grown. I want to wander and wonder about hills, valleys, animal tracks, and learn survival skills.
I want to be unafraid to ask about who am I and what should I do. I want to tell people how I have cleaned toilets and thought it was fun. I want to see your face after I tell you that I have graduated from college and have a teaching degree in Physical Education just like you. I want to believe that I will have half the energy that you had to fulfill my dreams. I want to hear those crickets that have been my friends because you made them so.

I love you Aunt Sis,
Connie #3.

I never thought this day would happen. I thought Sis would go on forever. She never seemed tired and was always going, going. I grew up with sis as a camper with my parents every summer. I worked for Sis from the time I was twelve and through college. She always had something for me to do. I'd spend hours sweeping the parking lot not getting why it had to be done. Boy did I learn work ethics. I always loved Sis and she was part of our family. My parents even helped her by being Mr and Mrs. Santa for Christmas in August and I remember my mom making pasta sauce in Sis's back kitchen for sphaghett dinners. Sis didn't just have a business she affected the lives and upbringing of so many kids. The best memories in my life were summers with Sis at Acorn Acres. We developed a second family with the campers next to us and are still in contact today. Thank you Sis for bringing such joy to peoples life through your vibrant personality and wonderful campground!

She was my gym teacher at Notre Dame High School, I remember her well, always enthaustic and great with us girls.

Thank you Sis for teaching me so much! You offered me my first job and I have so many memories from working at Acorn Acres. The experiences I had at Acorn Acres helped me in the years to follow. You had a true impact on so many people, particularly young people, in the area. Though you were sometimes strict, underneath it all you had an enormous heart and were loyal to your staff. You truly cared for your staff and campers. You supported and encouraged people to pursue any endeavor that they felt passionate about and committed to. For me it was biology research. When I received academic opportunities during the summer you always would give me time off and encouraged me. I never had to worry I was risking my position at Acorn Acres to accept these opportunities - not many employers would have been accepting or supportive of this. I knew I always had a job waiting for me when these brief but valuable experiences were over. I now have my PhD in genetics and your support over the years played a role in this achievement. Thank you so much. You will be sorely missed.

The world as we knew it is no longer the same. We grew up with your knowledge, with your teachings and you cared for each and every one of us. Everyone looked forward to every summer and spending it at the campground. You were a very special person in so many lives. You were our shining light on one of the hardest days that we had to endure. You will be missed greatly but your memory will continue to shine for years to come. For all you gave at Notre Dame, Thank you ! Rest in Peace, Sis, I am sure you and my Dad will now start a poker game in Heaven.

Sis, how you created such an incredible and loyal staff I will never know. You were both hard on us and incredibly loving and generous to us. Thank you for the good... and the bad... I learned so much. Thank you for taking a chance and trusting me!

To my fellow awesome teammates (Chris, Mark, Suzie, Mike, et al)... cherish the late night drives via the hey wagon somewhere down the road, doing the "rooms," summer camp, the Halloween haunted hey ride, sports TV playing nonstop for key events (Olympics, tennis, CT Sun, Red Sox and World Series), snack bar (with fries, Slushies, sundaes, pizza, burgers, hots dogs, and more), arguing who was the "wheel," and the Christmas parties... in January... with gifts in the famous Acorn Acres wrapping paper! They're memories that our ours... and created by one loving, caring, and unique woman! "Oh, my!"

From summer camp in the 60's that Sis and my dad ran at Gardner's Lake until recently, Sis was synonymous with camping, enjoying outdoor life, community and fun.
Camping both seasonally and weekending at Acorn Acres was always fun with so many activities. It was truly a way to bring families together and that put a smile on Sis' face.
Thank you Sis from the bottom of our hearts for literally decades of fun.
Prayers go out to her entire family which includes those she adopted as family at the campground.

Sympathy to all your family and friends. Just last night Pat Lewis and I (Pat Kirby) were speaking of her and what she brought to Norwich with womaen's baseball teams not knowing of her passing. She brought together a group of young women and formed a team called the Flashes back in the 50's that was a #1 team for a long time, then a basketball team that was top rated also. She was an inspiration for women in sports, big hearted, lovable, charitable and just a genuine human being. You are missed already by so many camper families but we knew you when history was being made for women league softball. We cherish the memories, guess it was time to hang up the catcher's mitt and mask for good. Thanks for the memories, rest in peace, God Bless. May HE hold you in the palm of HIS hand.sincerely, Pat Kirby Pellegrini, left field & Pat Lewis, first base.

June 5, 2018

My condolences to the O'Neill family and the extended family of Acorn Acres. Sis was a significant part of my childhood summers at Acorn Acres - from the activities to selling me penny-sweets. Sis was also one of the few people who could beat my Dad at pool in the Rec Hall. There were also many occasions when I did my best to avoid Sis as she patrolled the campground in her golf cart because, of course, I was breaking a rule at the time. Losing Sis feels like the end of an era. Sis will be deeply missed.

Sis and Acorn Acres were part of my childhood. My parents' best friends were met camping at the site next to ours. Many years and a new camper later, my parents are camping there again - this time hosting grandchildren. Some things at Acorn Acres have changed, (like not having to wear bathing caps to swim in the pool! My daughters have no idea ...) but not Sis. She was the same! I knew she was ill and in the hospital, but I thought for sure she'd be well by camping season. Acorn Acres will not be the same without her. Condolences from the Carter family to the O'Neil family. May she rest in peace - running the campground in the sky!

My deepest sympathy to the O'Neil family. For many many many years I've learned a lot about the O'Neil family from my mother, Patricia (Lee) Pappagallo. Story states that the Lees and the O"Neils were such great friends that each couple had babies and named them the same, there were 2 Barbara's, 2 Thomas's and 2 Patty's. I remember riding my bike to my grandfather's house on Sunday afternoons to always find him and Mr. O'Neil sitting in lawn chairs, still in their church clothes. Well about 4 years ago I went to Acorn Acres to do the Paintings for Relay for Life and finally met Sis O'Neil and she was everything my mother had said, the kindest most gentlest soul I would ever meet. Rest In Peace Sis O'Neil, I hope your sitting with my mom right now catching up on old times. God Bless

This amazing woman has touched the lives of so many. She has provided countless childhood memories to all who passed through the gates of Acorn Acres. The news I got today of Sis' passing has touched my soul so much. Just last year, she was dancing the Macarena with us at the Saturday dance party at Acorn Acres. She laughed so much and we all knew how much joy was in her heart. I will never forget how on her last birthday, we brought her a cake and her smile was absolutely priceless. I just can't believe it and I've only known her a year but I tell you all, under her spunky self, she was a very loving woman. Sis you will be missed by sooooooo many and I want to personally say Thank you for being such a feisty lady with a big heart. May you Rest In Peace. See-Ya
